I need to change the distributor gear and bushing on my 92 Dakota 3.9L. Have any of you done this? How did you get the parts out? Any tips?
Thanks,
Milton

Message: You should get tool # C3052 Distributor Drive Bushing Puller, and tool # C3053 Driver-Installer from Mopar. With those tools, you can change the bushing without to much trouble. To remove the gear, make a tool from a piece of welding rod with a 1/8" hook on one end and a loop on the other end big enough to stick your finger in. Hook the edge of the gear and pull it out of the block. It will probably come out hard because of varnish buildup below the bushing contact area. When you reinstall the gear, be sure to follow the procedure in the service manual to maintain proper timing. With the engine at TDC, # 1 firing, the slot in the gear should point to the first intake bolt on the left side (driver side ) of the engine. Dan

Message: Thanks Dan. This arrangement is new to me, as I am more used to older cars, and airplanes. Any guess as to how much the tools are? Can I rig up a one time use tool for this job?
Thanks,
Milton

Message: Milton, The tools are fairly easy to make. If you can send me your E-Mail address, I can send you some drawings and instructions for making the tools and how to use them. Dan

Message: Fixed my Dakota. Swapped out the drive gear and shaft. Cost me $65 instead of the $300 the dealer wanted. Used a strong magnet to pull out the gear/shaft. 2 hours of my time, and the truck runs like a watch. Trying to make it to 300K, and I am 2/3 the way there.
Thanks,
Milton
