Thanks for the help on my other questions! I've got a 5.9 and I had to refill my radiator and had air in the system, but I've been driving it and keeping the reservoir filled and the temp seems to be settling down a bit. However, sometimes when I turn off the engine, the whole plastic assembly that contains the reservoir/fan guard/washer fluid will be shaking and there's a boiling sound coming from the reservoir with a little steam escaping from the overflow vent. Is this normal or is this just the air getting out of the system or something else?

Are you still noticing hot temps? Beyond that, I would say that if you have not done so already, you should give the upper radiator hose a good squeeze, let the air bubble out (be careful not to squeeze too quickly). If you have done that already, I apologize for the idiot lesson.
Beyond that, sounds like it could be a thermostat going bad.
I don't think what you are hearing and seeing is normal though...

No more hot temps yet....after this last "bubbling" about two days ago, I haven't had anything but solid mid-range temps (the way it used to be before my problems). The reservoir is full and stays full whether hot or cold. The changes are for the good, and I'm very happy, but I was just wondering if anyone else had had a bubbling radiator after a flush or refill. Thanks!

I had that problem with bubbling. I was told to drill a small hole on t-stat(1/8"). You drill the hole so it's inside the t-stat housing. If you drill it too close to the edge of the t-stat it will be blocked off by the t-stat housing on the intake.

Get a infrared thermo gun and at normal operating temp at idle look for any major temp. differentials. You may have a coolant circulation problem, ie., stat, waterpump, partially plugged rad. or it could be a headgasket compression leakage into the coolant system. To confirm the latter, have a compression test performed.

That's a little more drastic than I was thinking. What evidence gives you the idea that it could be a problem as big as one of those things you mentioned? Keep in mind, I do all regular MX myself (although I'm still learning a ton) and right now I live in Ecuador where there are very few mechanics that have ever seen a Dodge (of any kind), let alone worked on one. My Dakota is envied by literally everyone I've talked to, and it's just a stock '00 Quad 5.9 4x4. They don't see that much down here.

the coolant should not be boiling into the overflow on a regular basis. I would say that either you have some type of overheating problem or your radiator cap is bad

I am a mechanic and have been for good 20+yrs. I know what I am talking about. I am not saying you do have a major prob. and i would hope you don't. What I am trying to do is help you troubleshoot your situation, whatever it may be. Thats how a good mechanic approaches problems. I will give you one more diagnostic tip then you are on your own. Get A Stant Coolant Pressure Tester and you will be able to test your cap and the integrity of the entire coolant system for leaks. If you do have a head gasket leak, that will show up. You can either Take my advice or just throw parts at it. Its just money right?

Hey, calm down folks. I came here for help, not to get everyone all worked up. I appologize to anyone (mj specifically) if it sounded like I was being rude, but I did not intend that.
