Subject: AC Not Blowing

Message:
Hi all!

I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota v8 4.7. I was driving down the freeway today when I noticed the AC quit blowing, (AND IT'S DAMN HOT HERE IN HOUSTON)...wooo doggy! Anyway I talked to a couple of friends and we checked the blower which works and power from all leads apear to be working. I was reading a post here and someone suggested the AC resisitor. Does anyone know how to test this? and is this a dealer part only? What about price?

Thanks! Great Site!

The resistors would ONLY effect the slower speeds. HIGH speed should work.

Check fuses first. Then the switch, etc.

I've seen them lose the lower speeds, but I've also seen them lose only high speed. I think that should be a card type resistor (looks like a credit card, sort of) Either way, if you only lost the lows or the high, I would say resistor. If you lost them all, you have a power or ground problem.

It appears that I lost them all. The only time I feel ANY air is when I'm on the highway and the outsidw air is cycling through. I pulled out the resistor (Credit Card Looking) but couldn't really test it. Anyone know how to check this? Also, I called AutoZone and O'Rielly's and they say it's a dealers part. Is there any online Dakota shops where I can get this if it's bad?

Leog,

I believe the part number for the resistor is 5174618AA. Google that and see what you find but I doubt it is sold online. It is only available from the dealer and cost me a bit over 11 bucks with tax. If you don't even have the high speed on the fan, I really doubt it is your resistor. The high speed is the default and should still work even if the resistor is bad. But, if you have a dealer nearby, it may be worth the 11+ bucks anyway, cuz it will probably go bad based on what I've read on this board.

Mine went bad at 80K miles and this board is where I found the info on it.

If not the resisitor, was it your switch?

why spend 11 bucks if you don't have to? why don't you check to make sure your getting voltage at the blower? isn't there a relay and a fuse for that fan too?

Checked it with a meter. There is voltage going to the blower. I even connected the blower to the battery and it worked fine. Don't understand.

You must have power AND ground to the motor. Unplug the motor connector. Go across the terminals of the harness side with a 12 Volt test light. Turn the blower switch and watch for a light. If it was operating properly, high speed would have bright light, low would be dim. If you have nothing, you are missing a power or ground. Check fuses first then break the circut down into sections (at each connector normally) and test each section. This is basic electrical troubleshooting. If you have power going into the resistor, you need it going out also.

p.s. when checking fuses, always pull them out and look at them.

Thanks Dave, after a little more troubleshooting I'm pretty sure it the resistor assembly. I called my local dealership and they said it would be a $9 cost. Going to get it tomorrow and try it. Will let you know. Thanks to all for the help!

I thank you all who have posted before because you probably saved me 50 to 100 bucks by not taking my truck to a dealer. My heater/AC blower would only work on high speed. I found this web site and the blower resister was also the problem in my truck. Easy to find just inboard of the blower. Removes with just two screws. 5 wire connecter is a little tricky. The red lock must be moved to the left and then the little black lock must be pushed toward the wires. It is very helpful to remove the two screw holding up the blower duct for the floor heating. Allows easy access to the two screws holding the piece in place. The new part number is 5174618AA. It is made in Slovenia (I think it may be the only thing they make????) and looks different. Instead of a sleek black credit card looking card this one has resisters visible on the card. Mine cost 19.57 after tax from the dealership. I could not find it at Autozone or Napa. Thanks again.

If the truck was under warranty that fan switch was under a TSB, and the dealer replaced mine twice under warranty, now I have to do it, along with the power window motor for the passenger window and two rear windows.

I have fought this problem for years now. The problem is not the resistor at all. Yes it fries the plastic around the pins. The real problem is that the pins heat up and flex the female connections, then over time they spread out and arc. Then the connections melt, fusing the plastic together. It's a really dumb design. Thinking about connecting wires directly to the pins and bypassing plug. Anyone see a possible side effect of this? I've went thru two blower motors and 6 resistor cards. And I run on high only, which I was told provided least resistance.
