This is either going to be the most retarted question or i might be on to something. First I road in my first corvett yesterday. Its a 2001 six speed manual. at 65 mph we were running at 1500 rpm thats amazing. Thats such a gas saver at 25 mpg on the highway. That got me thinking if a viper trany can be swapped into my 5.9 r/t. Yes i know that a viper motor is a v10. But i know a 4.3 v6 trany will bolt up to a 305 (chevy of corse) Any way anyone know what type of tranny is in the viper? 6 speed or even an auto trany what type is it. Also i know it would be alot of money and alot of work but how many people have something like that.

P.S. the 5.9 r/t tranys suck. Im on my third trany at 40,000 miles

the viper came with a six speed manual only. i don't think that it would bolt up. have you had to replace the heads on your r/t because my buddies r/t has been the biggest peace of junk.

Have you been putting in Mopar factory rebuilds?

Like toolfan said, the viper has a 6 speed manual. That's it. It's not as indistructable as you might think, but it's pretty tough all things considered. Definately not a bolt up job. I'm sure somebody has done an R/T manual conversion though...

It is the T56 6-speed. Same trans used in Corvettes, Camaro's, etc...They basically just change the bell housing to fit the different engines. I don't think I would bolt up to a 5.9, but I could be wrong.

3 tranny's in 40K? What the heck are you doing to them? Built properly, the 46RE can withstand some power. Send it here I'll build it.

well 1 had to be compleatly replaced the other twoo were slipping. not major really the bands needed to be replaced some seals were bad. Now its leaking transmission fluid somewhere. Back to the shop and i dont think its the mechanics because every time its been worked on by a diffrent shop. Also my moms 04 sebring with 7000 miles while sitting a stop light will sometime go into neutral by itself, while its in drive. diamlerchrysler transmissions suck. Love the motor and style and everything else.

If you have an automatic and want to go to a manual, isn't it more work than bellhousing, tranny, driveshaft, clutch mechanisms and pedal but, also that fact that your crankshaft may not have a recess for a pilot bushing in which your tranny input shaft needs to properly work with your engine?
Oh, and of course you need a new PCM and have to mount a shifter for it too.

is the v10 the same style(like 3.9 and 5.2 are minus 2 pistons) as 1 of the v8 with 2 more pistons?

You know something occured to me- does anybody remember the Copperhead concept? It was going to be a similar Plastic fantastic like the viper, only it would use a slightly hotter than normal 360. I wonder what transmission was used in the concept car...

its a 99 r/t hegot it used at 67000miles and has put a new motor in it when the heads went out. the cat went bad they just took it out and now his trannys 2 gear is gone. my friend dad works on trannys and say its from shifting it manually on the auto. he has only put 5000 miles on it since he got it. my dak is one relible rig. she had 145000 on it when i bought and have now put 5000 on it and had the brakes go out and the ball joints go out. the lower ball joints is what im working on right now?

The bellhousing on the viper is the same as the dakota. All of the 3.9, 5.2, 5.9, & 8.0 engines have the same bolt hole pattern. They are all base off the original small block mopar (318, 340, 360, etc...)

mills,
You could do that, but why would you want to?

The reasons most (if not all) people want the Viper 6 speed is the double over drive that lets you cruise down the interstate at 80mph and only turn about 1500 RPM's with 4.11 gears in the back.

The 6spd also has better gear spacing which makes it better for racing. 1st gear in the 5spd is only used when pulling a heavy load and is pretty useless at the drag strip.
