Subject: PCV Valve Rattels Bad IP: Logged
Message: Like the title states, my PCV valve in my 02 R/T just rattles and shakes really bad. You can hear it ratteling in the cab even. I've replaced it twice now in the last month and still have the same problem. Any ideas on what would cause this or a possible fix? Thank you for any ideas.

Message: Someone else had this problem on their v6 but I don't know how they solved it. One guy said he put a v8 valve in but that seems like a bandaid for the real problem. I'm thinking that a vacuum leak in the line could cause that problem.

Message: I am thinking vacuum leak also. Doesn't a PCV valve rattle anyway when they are now with NO pressure or suction on it? That leads me to believe there is no or not enough suction on the valve in your case.

Message: I would be doing a compression check first > In order for the PCV to rattle you have to have fluxuating vacumn > And to have that far as I am aware you need to have one cylender performing differant > One other posibility is a defective vacumn hose colasping and opening rapidly > There are also several vacumn operated devices on these new cars > One may be defective > I would think a bad cylender is the least likely problem you might have

Message: Thank you all for your ideas. I've also talked to some more people and have heard vacumn leak also. Another person brought up the solinoid (spelling?) I'll have to really start doing some checks of the hoses soon.

Message: The PCV valve is suppose to rattle at idle. If it rattles while you are driving, then you have a problem. If it does not rattle at idle, then it is clogged up and needs to be replaced. Now some PCV valves seam to rattle louder then others. But any way you look at it, PVC Rattle is good thing at when idling.

Message: What would cause a rattle at idle unless the vacuum is fluctuating. The rattle is from the ball moving either up and down or back and forth. I suppose some could have enough slop to move back and forth.
I would agree that the rattling is not an indication of bad valve but that of a good one.

Message: Yeah, I've been told as long as it moves it's alright. I just don't remember it being so loud that I could hear it in the cab when I first got the truck. It vibrates and rattles real good at idle. I guess maybe it might be normal then. :-)

Message: That is why I said that some are louder then others. I had bought one brand that I could here from inside the truck. I changed brands and got one that was not so loud.

Message: try replacing the PCV...if that doesn't work check you belly pan gasket. Or else hook up a vacuum check and check all your hoses.
I had the same problem...loud as hell, sounds like there's no oil and the valves are ticking outrageously loud. So i know that it is not normal. you should not be able to hear the PCV almost at all even when under the hood.
