Message: DC has owned Detroit Diesel for quite some time. Detroit Diesel was originally part of GM, but it was spun off. DC also owns Freightliner, Sterling, and Western Star. This is part of the reason you see a ton of Detroit Diesels in Freightliners. There have been rumblings of DC switching over to either Detroit Diesel or MB instead of the Cummins 5.9 for years.

Message: Does Detroit Diesel make a 4-stroke engine? And one that is suitably sized for the light vehicle market?
Years ago (OK, back in the 70s and 80s) I think DD made only 2-stroke supercharged engines. They were monsters, but only for big applications. Have they "evolved" into other technologies?

Message: Detroit Diesel does make several 4 stroke diesels now days. I also think they have smaller motors now but probably not suitable for a small pick up like a Dakota

Message: DDC does make 4 strokes now. The smallest one that I know if is an 11 liter straight 6. If you want something suitable for a Dakota, you need to go to Europe or Japan.

Message: 11 litres? I can fit THAT little thing in MY truck! ;-)
Yes, from driving the country the 2 stroke detroits are becomming a lot rarer than they used to be. Probably a combo of emissions and the fact that they've got 4 strokes doing 1100 hp these days.
Give me the two stroke! Screw the noise, if it bleeds, it leads! One memory in my drives from PA to AZ that will always stand out is being next to this beautiful Pete, painted a candy Red. Everything on the truck was beautifully polished. It was a two stroke detroit, dual straight stacks on it. Looked like it was something from the late '70s. Man it was beautiful- enogough to almost make a grown man cry. Obviously it was privately owned, probably somebody who pulls strange oversize/overweight loads.
Anyway that's getting off topic. Detroit from years and years ago used to offer small motors, that would go into tractors and chippers and stuff like that. I'm not really current on who Detroit sold that out to. They might have just folded the tent on it.
