Subject: new to 1/4 mile track IP: Logged
Message: I've had my fully stock 2003 rc r/t for about a year now and i love the truck..i read posts of how slow everyone says it is but in the mean time I'm smoking all sorts of vehicles just messing around at stop lights...
the problem is that i have nothing to back it up...I'm from a small farm town in eastern idaho and I just moved to boise idaho..they have a fairly nice 1/4 mile track here and I would love to have something on paper to show my performance, but I've never raced on a track before...I've only seen videos. Before I look like a moron rolling up to the line what are the basics I should know before I show up? (if I should roll through the water or not, how long or if I should burnout, etc.) sorry if I'm taking up space on the message boards but I figured the best place to go for this advice would be other dak owners...thanks

Message: Do not go throught the water pit unless you have slicks. Do a burn out just enough to get a fine mist around your tires. That's enough to get them warm and sticky. When you stage up hold the brake and the gas and rev it up to about 1500 but you'll have to play around first to see what your stall is. When the 2nd yellow flashes take your foot off the brake and slam the pedal down. If you have traction problems just ease into the gas. You will be suprised on how different you will hook up on the track.

Message: When staging, roll forward very slowly, its easy to go past your mark. There are 2 sets of 2 lights (both yellow) at the top of the tree, roll until all 4 are lit. If you are not forward far enough, only the top lights will be on, if you are too far, only the bottom will light up. Practice your launches, roll into the throttle, stall it up a little, slam it all the way, just see what gets you the best 60' time.

Message: Not all the tracks will have that type of staging. You will just have to watch what the other people do before you go up to race. Here is Muncie, IN they put in a new tree where there are no yellow at all. Just hits red when your staged then goes green whenever. Everyones reaction time was over 1 second.

Message: We have 3 yellows then green here. We always went on the 3rd yellow. If you have traction problems, don't be afraid to let a little air out of the back tires. I used to run my camaro at about 20-25psi. I got the best traction with that. Play around and see what you find. I always went through the water pit with street tires. Just do the burnout for a second or two the roll up to stage. At the light brake torque the truck and find the stall speed (the point at which the converter engages and wheels break loose.) Also I would probably shift your truck manually from low and turn off OD. Basically have fun and try not to break anything!!!

Message: I wouldn't suggest rolling through the water unless you have to, a regular street tire doesn't need the water to break loose to burn rubber, a slick does. Besides, some dragstripes won't let you roll into the water with street tires...

Message: Firebird has the two sets of two yellow staging lights. It also has three yellows, a green, and the ever menacing red.

Message: sweet, thanks for the info guys...appreciate it...i'm going to try to head down there before it gets too cold and scout out some of the other locals racing just to get a good idea and then I think i'm going to give it a shot..one other question though...
on a burnout, I'm not sure how hard to hold down the brake...i'm kind of afraid up messing up my brakes whenever i do it..am I doing this right or is there some other hidden method I don't know about...thanks again.

Message: Just lightly hold the brake and gas it up until you feel the wheels start to spin a little. Then slam the gas down and your tires should spin pretty easily as they will probally be cold at that point. Some times there is guy up there to tell ya when you have smoke on your tires or just look in your mirror for smoke. If your truck is quiet enough you can can hear the tire squeal then turn into a winding noise which is a indicator that your smokin your tires.
