Message: I need some help. I have a 00 dakota with 4.7L and it's ran bad for a long time. Had it to 2 mechanics they cleaned throtle body and tps and said to run fuel injector cleaner. Also have replaced all 4 O2 sensors. began to see codes again : injector codes and fuel bank lean. dealer diagnosed fuel rail and 4 injectors bad so I replaced and next day have p0171 and it misses and jumps at highway speed and MPG sucks . After spending over 1,000 dollars and it still runs bad. Where should I go next : a new TPS??

Message: Besides replacing parts, what have you inspected? Did you check your fuel pressure? Have you pulled the sparkplugs and looked at their color? When you say it runs bad, how does it run bad? Under what conditions does it run best/worst. Give us some details. Why did the dealer do what they did and send you on your way without fixing it? How many miles are on your truck?

Message: We need more information as RobC said. It could be anything from a clogged injector to a missing injector driver from the PCM. First thing I would do is return to the dealer and demand that the car be fixed like they said it was.

Message: my mechanic has inspected and cleaned tps, iac , plugs, o2 sensors, fuel injectors. but never fuel pressure test. The problem with the dealer is they don't care if you have a way to get to work or not. My problem was diagnosed in a day but my fuel rail didn't show up for 2 weeks and then someone forgot to order the injectors. I am tired of dealing with dodge so I took it to another mechanic to get parts put on. The problem seemed like it was fixed when I drove it but the check engine light came back on and it started to act funny.. The truck runs ok now at first but after it warms up the idle begins to pulsate and you can't go down the road at 50mph smoothly. Also, the truck hesitates a couple of secs. when I accelerate from a stop. Then it finally starts to smooth out and after a cloud of thick black smoke will accelerate good. My main problem the whole time is the problem with the idle pulsating when trying to drive a steady speed and the amount of gas I dump in this POS daily. The truck has about 70000 miles on it and runs the worst after the motor is warmed up. I have read some fixed their idle proble with the TPS and some had success with a dealer reflashing the PCM. Isn't there a recall for reprogramming the PCM due to poor peformance and bad emissions.

Message: i'd have that mechanic check the fuel pressure and the MAP sensor to make sure they are within spec. and i'd also go back to that first place and either demand some money back or get them to fix it right this time.

Message: Ryan,
What does the exhaust look like? Do you get black soot coming out of the tail pipe.
Also did the truck run better when the o2 sensors were changed.

Message: yes I do get black soot coming out of the tailpipe. Not as bad now since o2 sensors and injectors were replaced. Still get it bad if I get into it from a standstill.

Message: Ryan,
I got something for you to check. Last year my 2000 4.7 liter started running rich, intermittent engine codes, and also black soot coming from the tail pipes.
It's kind of crazy what it turned out to be. Right off the power steering pump discharge line is a two wire connector to a pressure switch. This switch blew (oil inside the connector) and leaked power steering fluid into the wiring harness and right down to the drivers side pre-cat o2 sensor. The sensor wiring and harness must be clear to get an accurate o2 reading. I replaced the pressure switch myself for about 15.00 and also replaced the o2 sensor and cleaned up the wiring. I think it's worth it for you to pop off the connector on the power steering line switch and check for fluid build up inside.
Sounds crazy but true. Also have seen other posts with same problem.
Good luck and let me know what you find.

Message: You are definately dumping some fuel if you blow a cloud of black smoke out. Sounds like you may have an injector stuck open, although you said they were replaced. If it were me, I would remove the fuel rail with the injectors in place, disconnect your coil wire and turn the key to look at the fuel pattern coming from each injector. If you see one dribbling out a lot of fuel replace it. They should have a fine, even mist in a circular pattern. Next would be secondary ignition and the o2's. Good luck man...

Message: Did you check the TPS ? If it incorrectly reads wide open at light throttle that will call for more fuel too; and yes, that would cause the black soot from a rich condition.

Message: I replaced the tps and reset the computer. It ran fine for a little while but then back to the usual. I'm just wandering if this code is stored into permanent memory and a dodge dealer will have to reset it.

Message: Same code still on our 2000 with the 5.9L, V-8, I do not see a power steering pressure switch on any schematic for the 5.9, maybe the engine coolant sensor or plugged/melted CAT? 142K on it. Coolant was a mess until recently flushed. PCM rebuilt and reflashed by A1 Cardone so we think it is ok. Check out the service manual from
