Subject: 02 R/T hesitation and backfire IP: Logged
Message: Hello all, I have an 02 R/T with 28K miles on it. I'm having a problem that when the engine is cold, mostly when I leave for work at night, the truck when I step on the gas will hesitate bad, almost like the engine feels like it will die. A few times now when I'm slowing down for someone turning ahead of me, then hit the gas, I can hear a pop coming from under the passengers side which I'm assuming is it backfiring. Almost feels like the transmission and the engine aren't talking right. I've been told that the throttle body sensor might have gone bad, and needs to be replaced. This only happens when the engine hasn't been run for a few hours. Anyone have any similar problems? Any insight is much appreciated. Thank you.

Message: Is the problem there all the time or just when it is cold? Does it return to normal after it is heated up? Is it only with a sudden change in throttle angle (stepping on it after slowing down) or does it hesitate with light throttle movement also (cruising)?

Message: The problem is only when it's cold really. After I drive 3 or so miles everything is usually fine. The hesitation and backfiring only happens with the sudden change in throttle angle, when cruising everything works great after it gets warmed up. Thanks for the reply!

Message: Could be the TPS or possibly something in the secondary igntion (plugs, wires). Does the truck have a rough idle cold, as if it had a cold misfire? I've seen TPS's have problems cold and be fine once warmed up. With the problem happening with sudden throttle movements I would suspect the TPS...but it would have to be properly diagnosed to be sure. You could try shaking (grab ahold and try to wiggle it) the TPS itself and see if you get any idle fluctuation. If you do I would replace the TPS. May or may not fix your problem. Sorry I don't have a better answer. Good luck.

Message: It seems to idle alright when it's cold, just when you hit the gas I get the engine cutting out and the hestation from that. Thanks for the advice Dave, I really appreciate it.
