Subject: was it factory lifted or not? IP: Logged
Message: I'm the proud owner of a '99 4x4 Dakota ClubCab 5.2L SLT with 31x10.5r15LT tires on it. Bought her new in '98 and she's just shy of 60k miles. So here's my problem, I can't stand how she floats and rolls when making turns on the highway. It feels like my in-law's Buick leSabre for cryin' out loud and I think it's dangerous to have that much travel in the body when making wide-arcing turns at 70-80 mph. Scary. My dakota usage consists of 5-8 hours highway driving followed by 1-2 hours of gravel road and trail driving. Minimal true off-road driving. I've been searching around on the internet for shocks to replace the factory junk. I've settled on either KYB Monomax or Edelbrock IAS. Question is, the KYB lists a shock for 4wd Dakotas with 2-3" lift. Since I've noticed my truck seems taller than other "unaltered" dakotas out there, does that mean the factory installed a lift or are my tires just making me think so? If I decide to fork out the extra $20 per absorber and go with the Edelbrocks, do I get the Performer or the Classic? Is the difference only in the paint on the shock? Thank you for your time!

Message: There were no 'factory installed lifts'..some of the 4x4 models just sit higher than others, and higher than almost all 2WDs. Your torsion bars are just turned up a bit more.
I dont know which shock to suggest...heard lots of people run and praise the edelbrock IAS though. Not heard much on the KYB. They seem big in the 'import tuner' crowd though.
The 3" Rancho lift and 2" shackle/Torsion bar lift are popular and that is why they offer a shock for a 2-3" lifted Dakota/Durango.

Message: a lot of dealers do lifts or off-road type packages on trucks.
my local ford dealer lately has been going nuts with all their custom lifted trucks with spinners and everything. a bit ghetto.
