Subject: Intermittent Idle fluctuation IP: Logged
Message: Problem: Intermittent idle fluctuation--idle cycles between 600 rpm and 1,500 rpm (up then down). The problem is much worse (more noticeable) on hot, humid days. Usually occurs after driving a while with A/C on and then placing the truck in park. On occassion, the idle will return to normal when the engine is turned-off and restarted, or by turning off the A/C. Idle fluctuation may also be noticeable during stop and go driving while in gear. The check engine light is not on and I have not checked for stored codes. Going to the Dodge Boys (outsanding service department) next week, but wanted to do some traveling during the long weekend. 2002 SLT 4 x 4 with 4.7 V8 and 80,000 miles. Appreciate your assistance and have enjoyed the message board. Fishful Thinking (boat's name)

Message: Sounds like your TPS sensor is bad. Only like $30 at autozone.

Message: Man,.. if i had to describe the problem that i am having with my Dakota,... I really do not think i could have done it any better.
I'm having the exact same problem.
But,... I just installed a 70mm TB though.
I'm going back under the hood today and recheck everything and make sure that everything is still tight under there from the TB to the Air-Filter. because that is all that I've messsed with under there.

Message: Oh,...
But with mine, when i'm at a red light it seems to idle between 600 and 1k. If i put it in Park then it idle at 1500-600rpm. If i shut the truck off and restart it, the idle shoots to 1k then sometimes slowly makes it way down to 600.

Message: I agree with Orangedakota. This is what I would try. Try to get the thing to a point where idle seems normal...no fluctuation. The go ahead and wiggle the TPS sensor and connector around. If the idle fluctuates or spikes as you do that...replace it. I've seen a hundred of em'.

Message: also force the truck to do an idle air relearn. I had similar problems on my WJ replaced the iac motor and the tps sensor. with ignition off unplug tps sensor, turn ignition on, do not start, should throw a code. Plug sensor in and start the truck will idle high for a while and eventually even out at your target idle rpm. While you are at it set the new sensor so it has .75v at the throttle closed position.

Message: It will learn using the target idle built into the PCM. And I don't think there is an adjustment on Chrysler TPS's.

Message: I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you who responsed to my concern. Really didn't have a clue where to start. You were correct, it was the Throttle Position Sensor. I also found a couple of bad vacuum hoses adding to the problem. Feels like the 4.7 is back again. Thanks again, Fishful Thinking

Message: I have the same problem but it happens only when idling in park. Does not happen in drive. I figured it was the TPS but have not tested it. I may just pick one up.

Message: We have the same idle fluctuations on a '00 4.7 automatic, plus an extreme idle rev up on start up before it calms down, hot or cold. Now the torque converter clutch kicks on and off at highway speeds. Any ideas if the TPS will cause all these neat tricks?
