Subject: '94 Dakota Sport starter issue need help IP: Logged
Message: I have a '94 Dakota Sport with the 5.2 V8, auto trans. Has a problem that I think is the neutral start switch: Turn the key in park or neutral and you hear the solenoid snap loudly but that's all, nothing else. Full battery juice, all accessories run adn headlights bright. BUT, if you hold the key fully engaged in the start position and jiggle the shifter around in neutral you can get the starter to engage as it should after and she fires up like a champ, but you get a random number of no-starts with only the solenoid snapping before the jiggling of the shifter hits the right magic and it finally engages the starter and starts the engine.
This sound like the neutral switch? And how hard is it to replace yourself?

Message: Sounds like it may be the contacts in the starter solenoid. Holding it in the start posision for a while sometimes cooks them and they make contact.Try holding it in the start posision without moving the shifter and see what happens. You can also jump the neutral safety switch and see if it starts. With the switch jumped it will start in any gear.If it is the switch, it is easy to change.Just unplug the wire and unscrew the switch. To jump the switch ground the center wire in the connector. The other two are for the back-up lights. It could also be that the linkage is not properly adjusted. Dan

Message: Ihad the same problem on my 93 318 and it was the two copper contacts in the starter any place that rebuilds starters will have them so just take the backing plate off but there is a spring behind the plate so watch the plate both copper pieces are inside just take them to the rebuilder and the should cost between 8 to 18 dollers hope this fixes your problem.

Message: UPDATE New symptom: The other day the engine would not shut off. Not dieseling, running as normal, but with ger selector in Park, turn key off and even removing the key, the engine kept idling. Had to put into Neutral and jiggle shifter in neutral a lot with key off to get it to open the circuit and shut off engine.
