Message: I was just wondering what the 3.9L is in relation to the 5.2 Some have told me its theoretically the same engine, is this true? What kind of reliability could i expect out of these motors?

Message: 93dak, the 3.9 is basicly a 5.2 w/ 2 cyl of disadvantage and it is a very reliable engine.

Message: i'd expect it to be a very reliable motor as long as it's taken care of.
I just picked up a '89 Dakota V6 long bed a month ago.. it's getting 19 mpg in the city and has 177K miles on the ticker. I loosened it's first bolt when i replaced the factory water pump.

Message: Thats doing pretty good Intense, even an ol' premag.
Also..the 318 comes out to roughly just under 40 cubes per cyl.
So do the math...40 x 8 = 320ci (318)
..........................40 x 6 = 240ci (239)
the 3.9 & 5.2 share the same bore and stroke- 3.91/3.31

Message: Ok now I see how they are related, 3.9 is just basically like having a 318 with less power if ya wanna call it.
My next question is what makes the 3.9/5.2 so darn "bulletproof"..?

Message: i really dont see any engine as bullet proof... you abuse them they die, you take care of it and maintain it, it will live.
easy as that IMO
now some things i dont like about the magnum motors... 4 head bolts per cylinder spread out the maximum distance allowed..

Message: One factor that contributes to the longevity of many mopar engines is their long rod design. The better geometry causes less wear on the piston rings and walls than a shorter rod design.
Another factor is the wider lifters that are easier on the cam than any of the other big 3. GM has the narrowest lifters, why you so often see a wiped cam lobe on a GM.
