Subject: 4.7 timing chain IP: Logged
Message: I've seen a few posts on timing chain replacement period, but nobody is talking specific engines... I haven't seen anyone asking about the 4.7. (mostly v6 and 5.9) How long before the timing chain needs to be replaced on the 4.7?

Message: It takes three chains on the 4.7L engine.
The Primary chain is driven by the crankshaft sprocket and drives an Idler, or intermediate sprocket. That Idler sprocket then drives two Secondary chains - one for the left camshaft sprocket and one for the right.
Picture it like the letter 'Y', with the vertical portion being the primary, and the angled portions being the secondaries.
The short Primary chain has its own tensioner. The secondary chains each have their own tensioner and chain guide.
The chains slide on the tensioners and the guides.
With regular oil and filter changes, I would think they'd last the life of the engine.
