Yeah. Since I wont be driving this on 100 mile trips through the mountains the 904 could do well I think. And it does rob less power.
My friend cooked his 904's repeatedly. But he ran high speeds for long distances.

Maybe a 904 will be what I use if I don't find a 5 speed manual used.

So. What about the 5 speeds from Dakota trucks???

As long as it can fit pretty close, I can "customize" the rest.

As far as the Buick goes? I don't think I'll be dropping a 455 in this biatch any time soon :p

i just thought i would throw my 2 cents worth in and say that i love my 4.7. ive got an 03 ext cab, 2 wheel drive that i drove from georgia to colorado pullin a trailer and a 60 inch big screen in the bed. never had a problem, doin 85 the whole way. the gas mileage sucked a little tho. bout 12.5 mpg

also, anyone know why my particular year of 4.7 seems to be kinda different? like when i look at parts, the 03 seems to be in a category of its own.

Graphite - I've read the problem with putting the truck manual transmissions in the older cars is mainly shifter location - you could measure before you buy one to see where it would be.

Justin - there are minor differences between many of the years. Most parts will interchange, but there's always some stuff that needs to be year specific no matter what year you have. I drop to 11 mpg towing 5000 lbs, but no complaints here. If you're going to work anything like that, you have to expect to go through some fuel. Many other trucks do worse.

This seems to be more of a 318 thread than the 287?

BTW Justin I have heard that 03's and up come stock with the H.O. intake, that might be a reason and in 2001 i believe they came with 68 mm TBs.

A true HO intake comes from the earlier Jeep aplication. Just because an intake is the same on the regular 4.7 and the newer HO engine doesn't make it an HO intake. They have the same waterpump too; but we don't call it an HO water pump - no extra performance between the regular part and the part on the HO motor; why call it an HO manifold ? The earlier true HO manifolds had runner length tuned for higher rpms; the intake you are referring too is a compromise design.

Kowalsky, you`re absolutelly right.
When i did my cams, i also put a HO intake (2002 model). Besides having 68 TB, FIPK, headers, 3in single c back, etc, i was frustrated by not having any change in performance up until 1600 or 1700 rpm. In compensation, it became awesome after 2500 and incredible fun up after 4000 rpm. This set up makes the graph lines a lot flater on med and high rpm, compared to the original out put.

What about the true H.O. having a computer timing adjust or somthing of that sort?

Justin - you have the regular 4.7; definitely not the HO. Wasn't offered in the Dak until this year.

Mike - the computer adjusts the timing on ALL of our motors.

Yah I understand that, it actually adjusts the timing all the time. I am talking about a more agressive timing advance over the other 4.7L controllers.

Yes, HO has more ignition advance. Justin, why are you disapointed ? You are already pleased with the performance of your truck if you thought it was an HO - now most of the torque of the HO package can be had by going to the HO cams; and most of the rest of the performance can be had with a good custom flash or the superchip. Only performance difference would be slightly lower compression; and you wouldn't find that much more power as easily from an HO 4.7. Time to get to work ?

Kowalski, that's cool with the shift linkage.

SInce this is a stripped car to built up, I wouldn't mine at all making linkage adjustments or the hole in the floor to accomodate the tranny.

One thing is, I've heard them 5 speed manuals are weak. How do they hold up to 400+ HP?

Graphite - yeah, that's what I've heard too; and I think why you can't get it in an R/T. Built up 904 might be best way to go, unless you want to invest in a Keisler, but I'm thinking you're trying to do it on a budget. Keisler's a bit rich for my blood.

Justin - how about the first 2 mods I already suggested for starters ?
