Subject: Ticking 4.7? You may these! IP: Logged
Message: If your 4.7 ticks or taps at start up it could be your hydraulic valve lash adjusters. They're a lot like a valve lifter in operation in a push rod engine, but since the 4.7 is an OHC engine they are called hydraulic valve lash adjusters. If they are weak they will bleed down when the engine is off causing them to tap at start up until oil pressure builds enough to fill them back up. Normally they shouldn't bleed down.
My 4.7 was doing just that. I bought enough of the lash adjusters to replace all of them on one bank of the engine(the other bank was quiet). I recently got rid of my Dakota before I got a chance to replace them so now I'm offering up for sale the 8 NEW lash adjusters that I bought along with the special tool to remove the rocker arms with out removing the cams(which you need to do to replace the adjusters). I paid over $100. for the 8 adjusters and almost $100. for the tool. I will sell them together for $90. + shipping. This job should take less than 2 hours to accomplish. If you're interested you can contact me at albatross32672@yahoo.com.

Message: I had this problem where you could hear it ticking with the hood up and idling. I switched over to synthetic oil and haven't noticed the problem in over 40k miles.
