Subject: Buying a '98 Dakota IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys. I'm buying a 98 Dakota extended cab v8 with the 318 motor. I assume that's the 5.2 v8? Anyway, is there anything I should look for? It looks to be in great shape even though it has 122,000 miles on it. I'm going back to look at it tomorrow. What should I look for?

Message: I have a 98' that I'm very happy with. The only complaint thus far is a leak (which I've seen quite a bit about here)that puts water on the passenger floor. If it sits outside, you may want to check for any damage something like that may have caused. Good luck with it.

Message: Look down the throttle body for any oil, that's a sign of a leaky plenum gasket. Not a terribly difficult fix but something you would have to do. Might be leverage to get them down on their price also if you point it out.

Message: i would also run a compression check. Pretty easy to do that way you can tell if the rings are bad.
purchased my dakota without doing that, once i got it home and started testing everything it was to late ;(
also check out the ball joints

Message: Also not a bad idea to ask for a Carfax if it's at a dealer or run one yourself. It's not 100% accurate, but it might tell you something.
