Subject: 99 4x4 5.2 Overheat Problem IP: Logged
Message: I have been looking for threads on this for a couple of days now, but no one has exactly the same symptoms that I do.
My Dak is a 99 4x4 with the 5.2. I'm at about 86k miles and I have the 5 speed manual tranny. I run the truck daily to and from my job, about 15-20 miles one way, here in the Memphis area (dang hot and humid).
My truck temperature seems to be just fine if I am driving, but goes up when one of a couple conditions occur:
1. When I have driven for a while (15-30 minutes) and have to stop for traffic, lights, etc..
2. When I run the a/c, particularly if I am in stop and go.
I have been thinking about installing a 180 t-stat to see if this helps (that's what my friend at work says I should do), but after reading some of the posts here I'm not sure. The radiator seems to be a uniform temperature, by hand only, and the fan doesn't turn really easily when the engine is cold.
Any advice you can offer would be appreciated!!
Thanks

Thanks to all who posted on this topic before. Lord knows I probably read them all!

How do you check that fan clutch again?

Message: well i just replaced my stock fan with a electric fan and have no problems at all. I had the same probs you listed, it would go up to 210 even tho i have a 180 tstat.
Just pop the hood with the engine running and check to see how much air is actually being blown. I know my clutch fan was not putting out hardley and air at all. Also, my fan could spin freeley when the engine was off.
I too have a 99 4x4 5.2
the efan install is not that hard, the hardest part is getting off the bitch of a nut. Other then that the wiring up is pretty simple.

Message: well i think the clutch fan from autozone is around $65. You can pick up an electric fan for $130 on ebay Ebay Link.
I went ahead and spent the extra cash and got the electric one for a couple reasons. Such as more HP and better gasmilage.
The install was pretty easy, wiring went in first. And then the hardest part was taking off the clutch fan nut, but a couple good wacks with a hammer in the direction it needed to spin, and it came off. Then I just picked up some longer bolts from homedepot and used the clamp on method.
My speedometer and odometer doesn't work so i cant tell an exact mpg increase, but its deff there and so is the extra power.
Plus+ if it ever fails on you, its easier to swap out a efan instead of that clutch fan. I think that the Efan will pay for it self in the long run with the extra MPG you will pick up.
I have to run premium fuel with my supercharged motor, so efan = more mpg = no brainer for me at 2.89 a gal.

Message: Thanks for the info.
I'm only comfortable doing the simplest of electrical work, so how simple is the wiring?
Also, if you don't mind, where do you mount the efan to?
Thanks again

Message: sicminds, what kind of electric fan did you install ? Tried a flex a lite 180 extreme on my 98 5.2 & found it not even close to adequate here in AZ. Had to go back to the stock P.O.S.

Message: i got the proform blackmagic 150 like fan with thermostat.
The wiring is easy, its all laid out in an easy diagram. one wire to + bat, one wire to + fusebox under the hood, one wire to - bat, and one wire spliced in with ac switch.
The fan clamps onto the raditor. the biggest pain with that is getting the ones on the bottom to clamp on, but all you have to do is lay on your back and look up into the engine. Pretty simple once you have those on you just tighten the top ones up.
So far so good with my fan here in FL it was 95 today at lunch when i ran it, ran it with the ac on too and had no probs.

You haven't replaced the speedometer yet? You should be able to fine a used one at the bone yard. Not sure if it's the speedometer? Does your cruise control work? Do you have a check engine light? If your cruise works and you have no check engine light, I would replace your instrumentation or speedometer. Easy to do, 4 screws and it comes out. I would first pull it out and put it in a few times to make sure it's not just the contacts that plug in.

Message: I see people say they replaced the clutch fan with an electric fan. Why hasn't anyone just gone to a bone yard to get one off another vehicle?

Message: back to the efan crap. i tried that crap. its all fine and dandy when your not in hot weather and its just easy driving. i noticed on my 93 5.2 4x4 auto that when i dropped the hammer the fan couldnt keep up. the power was nice, but it just wouldnt do it! of course it was when my coolant needed changing, and i may have a bad t-stat too.
