Message: '99 Dakota SLT, 5.2 4x4
Recently completed the intake plenum gasket repair, and started overheating afterwards.
Removed T-stat, new 12# pressure relief cap.
During stop and go driving, it slowly runs up to about 210 and the contents sound to be boiling when I shut it off.
Upper hose is very hard, and it will actually bypass coolant at the relief cap. The upper hose does not pressurize after start, only when it gets really hot.
I fugure it could be a head gasket (no steam in the exhaust though), water pump impeller is corroded to almost nothing and isn't moving enough water, or a blocked radiator. Any other ideas?
With the cap off, running the engine up and down does move water through the radiator, and you can squeeze the upper hose and get water to obviously move in the radiator.
What could cause the overheating, what should I check.
Aaaargh!!!
Thanks in advance.
John

Message: I've had the problem with my R/T heating up. I too changed the Thermostat and radiator cap, but the cap was a 16#. Double check the requirements on your cap, I think you are suppose to have a 16# as well. Also, refill the radiator for the 1st couple of times you run it, you may have some voids in the engine where air is sitting. Air in your system is not good because it is condusive to Steam.

Message: Check to see if the lower part of your rad is blocked .... it was liks that on my old 99 318 ... i could feel with my hand that the lower part was cooler than the upper part .... or you can go to a local shop and see if they have one of the "lazer" temp gauges...... i replaced everything before i found that my rad was blocked ....... and make sure your T-stat is in with the spring facing down .....

Message: More Info:
Fan clutch appears to be working OK, I do get the roar when the operating temp approaches 200 or so, and it continues to roar until the temp drops down a bit. I thought it might have been the fan but troubleshot that earlier.
Beginning to suspect the radiator and perhaps still some air in the system from when I had the intake off, although I have burped it several times and am currently running with no thermostat. Temps in Albuquerque are such that I am not pulling any cold running codes, just gets hot on my drive home in the afternoon\early evening.
The pressure relief cap is actually a 15# if I remember correctly, it is whatever pressure was spec'd, just the lever relief type.
Will check the radiator after my drive home today to see if one part is warmer than another, sounds like the most likely culprit.
Any good suggestions for aftermarket radiator? I will be doing more off-roading here in New Mexico and Colorado and want to keep the little beastie as cool as possible.
Thanks again
John

Message: John,
You don't want to run it much with no Thermostat. The thermostat does dual duty. In the winter it helps get the operating temp up, and in the summer it slows the water down as it goes through the radiator so it can get cooled down. If the water goes throught the radiator too fast, it returns to the engine still too hot, thus overheating again.

Message: One thing you might want to try before changing that radiator. Let me put it this way, I am having the same problem with mine and even though I have flushed the system twice, changed the Thermostat, and radiator cap and it still wants to overheat, I still have one thing I'm going to try. I'm going to drain a quart or 2 out of the radiator and replace it with Vinegar. My thinking is that if it's a calcium build up in the rad, the vinegar will melt it. I've done that before in a 1984 Toyota and it worked, so, what the hey. I thought of that because it's what you use to clean coffee makers.
