Subject: 99 5.2 4x4 Clutch Fan HELP! IP: Logged
Message: I attempted to install a electric fan this weekend and now are stuck. Got everything wried up and ready to go, but can't figure
out how to stop the pulley from turning when trying to take off that big nut.
I have searched all of the boards and read about it but still cant figure it out. There are four holes in the pulley but they are too close to the nut it self to fit a screw driver in there.
Please help as I am without a ride until i get it fixed.
thanks!

Message: Not quite sure on where that big nut is that you are talking about, but shock usually will work on something like that. What I mean is, put the wrench on it and smack the wrench with a hammer or a rubber mallet in the direction you want it to turn. That usually works for me.

Message: Leave the belt on, then take a wrench and smack the wrench to try and free it up. Once loose it will wind off.
I use an air chisel as it works better - but does hurt the nut some.
Or get the special tool to do it.

Message: what special tool is supposed to be used? I will try it again to smash it a couple times. I tried it before but with a regular hammer. I will try it with a rubber one this time.
thanks for your help

Message: grab the side of the pulley with some vise-grips. just don't go too tight as to bend the pulley, just enough to keep it from turning.

Message: A rubber strap wrench also works well to hold the pulley.

Message: I used a 1/4" bolt .... had to cut it to length so I could get the maximum amount of the bolt thru the pulley hole ........ turn the pulley until the bolt hits on the water pump body and then back the nut off that secures the fan assy.

Message: What direction should the nut turn? Once i have the wrench on the nut should it turn towards the driver or passengerside?
Think i might of been doing it backwards

Message: the nut should turn towards the passenger side. Mine wouldnt budge either. Just put a wrench on it..and give it a couple good whacks with a hammer, impacting blows almost straight down on the wrench. This will loosen it usually. ....as far as the special tool, i bought it, it doesnt work on our pulleys with the holes. Wasted $30. If you really want to try it though ill sell ya mine for $20 :p
