Subject: 99 Dakota Trans cooler problems, ideas?? IP: Logged
Message: I just had a shop install a trans cooler on my 99 5.2 and now my Dak is acting funny. I was driving last night, came to a stop light and tried to accelerate and my Dak wouldn't go! I had to really step on the gas to get it going, butit was almost like the parking brake was on but it wasn't. Then this morning I drove about 20 miles and my overdrive off light came on all by itself!!! Then I felt the trans downshifiting and slowing the truck down...so now I'm taking it back in to get it removed...any other thoughts on what might have happened??? Hope I haven't done any damage to the trans. Thanks in advance for advice!

Message: It sounds like they disconnected some things to put the cooler on. I would take it back to them and complain!

Message: I'm not sure what they did but I'm pretty pissed off about it. I'm supposed to tow a boat from Chicago to Kentucky in a couple days and this is not what I need right now. They also installed it in front of the radiator, shouldn't it on the back side?

Message: That's why I do things like that myself. When I lived in Staten Island, I took a car in to have a tune up. They also put silicone on the carb to get me to have them fix that. They also slashed the boot over the CV joint and that went out. You have to watch some of these shops because you cannot trust all of them. By the way, besides the Trans oil cooler, you may want to change the fluid to AMZOIL's ATF. I've heard nothing but good about it, and no I am not an AMZOIL Dealer.

Message: I installed trans coolers myself on 2 Dak's (00 & 03) and never ran into a problem. I agree with Red99, I do most of my own work as I have seen to much shotty work done by dealers or sleazy mechanics. Amsoil ATF is good, used it in my 00 and now using it in my 03.
Try this, drive the truck for 5-10 minutes to bring the trans to operating temps, park it on a level surface, apply Ebrake, shift to neutral, then check your tranny fluid. You have to ask your self what did they do and what could they have screwed up. ATF being low would be my first guess since there isn't too much that needs to be done while installing the cooler.
BTW, I wouldn't have the trans cooler removed if your towing something with significant weight, the trans will need extra cooling, also, it should be in front of the radiator so it will get the coolest air.

Message: Well I just got a call back from the shop and they said there is too much trans fluid and they think that is causing the problem, could this be right? I kept telling them that this never happened until they put in the cooler and they are of course not wanting any part of that.

Message: Too much Transmission fluid??? To check the tranny fluid, start up your dak, make sure you are on level ground, put the truck in Neutral, and then check the level. If there is too much transmission fluid in it, then I would guess that they did it. I would have thought that it would be low.

Message: Well I took it to a trans place now, my Dodge dealer was the one who overfilled the trans fluid since it was flushed exactly 2 months ago. None has been added since, now the trans place is telling me that there's not enough pressure pumping my trans fluid in and out of my trans and that's why it's slipping. They unplugged both lines to my trans and said nothing came out when it was started. They said usually it should be "pissing" out fluid. They are looking to see if it's a bad pump.
