Subject: Are all "Y Pipes" the same?
IP: Logged

Message:
Since I've had my Dak I've heard people mention that the stock Y Pipe on a 4.7 is a very bad design. Earlier in the week I saw someone else post a picture of the y-pipe that is crushed down badly where it is put together. I also noticed most people say they have two pre cats then the 3rd cat.

So when I was under my truck yesterday, I noticed my Y Pipe don't look too bad at all and probably not worth messing with until i go true duals later.

And even though it's been submerged in water and mud, my Flowmaster I welded in 2 years ago is still holding up fine :)

I first had true dual exhaust and it sounded really bad as if it were "Blabbing" - Blab Blab Blab - I then inserted a small pipe between the two pipes and what a difference it made in sound and performance - The "Blab" went to a nice Mopar roar and It actually made my truck run better. When I have the chance I am going to change out my short inserted pipe to more like an X pipe for better flow amd resonence.

Graphite - my '00 looks exactly like your y-pipe. Maybe the guys who are saying that have cut them open to see something we can't ? I didn't think it looked too bad from the outside either.

Yup that is how my Y pipe looks. I have 2.5 mandrel bent pipe dumped after the axle. I love my magnaflow. No drone what so ever. I recently cut off my third cat and took it for a drive afterwards with an open Y. Now that is loud. I may try 3" after the Y just for hell of it. Heard good things about it.

Does the dual exhaust really help these 4.7 Daks? The piping on my 2000 Quad Cab 4X4 all looks to be in great condition but better performance and better fuel economy are always wonderful side effects of mods like the dual exhaust. Any suggestions on which brand and size to get?

Geez,.. Your Y-Pipe is 100% Better then what comes Stock on the `05 Dakota 4.7L

Check out my Y-Pipe the pictures are the 4th post down in the thread.

http://www.onlineautorama.com/forum/showthread.php?t=525

Another Plus you have is that your Cat Converters are seperated from your Y-Pipe where mine is not and is all one unit with REALLY BLOWS!

I was going to go true dual but decided not to until i can find some Cat's that work with my sensors then I'll just run everything off each header using an H-pipe. Some talk about a simm that fools / tricks computer but i'd rather not go that route.

Yes. THAT's the Y-Pipe someone else showed. See. There is a difference on some models. Weird.

Here's YOUR Y-Pipe OnlineAutoram

And here is mine...

I see you got some shorty headers. Do you like those? I want full length myself.

Here's one area that causes restriction

Your stock pipe

By comparison the the JBA pipe is a full two inches in the same area.

OnlineAutoram, why wouldn't you want to go with the simms? You can still keep or replace your downstream cat with a high flow? I suppose if you are still under factory warranty you are probably stuck with it at least until it expires.

It's not about just JBA, it's about mandrel bent tubes vs. factory crush bent tubes. I don't know who makes y pipes for the 4.7. You could probably have one made or modify the stock pipe by replacing the bottom portion.

Yeah i'm thinking there'd be a warranty issue if i started to install O2 Simms on it with only 1092 miles on it.

N56629 has it going on,...
He's got a sweet JBA Y-Pipe but I believe JBA only has them for 2001 and below if i remember correctly.

Yes, you would have to get an OEM style replacement and no O2 sims for you. That shouldn't prevent you from modifying the stock pipe however. I can't see how that portion after the sensors and b4 the cat would affect warranty.

Yup I thought of that to.
But,... The Y-Pipe is so small in Diameter to begin with. How much would I really gain if Any by just adding larger pipes at the ends of the current stock small ass pipes? I'm not sure it'd be worth it Gains vs. $$$.$$.

I think i'm just going to wait until late fall or winter to see if more after market stuff comes out for the 2005 Dakota's and wait to see what happens and in the mean time gather as much info on this subject as i can.

I need to call F&B today at some point to see if my CC went through. I ordered a 70mm TB about 2 weeks ago and havent heard anything back yet and havent seen the charge for it so not sure what happened.

Tomorrow I'm going back to the shop to have the torque checked on the headers that were installed 2 weeks ago to make sure the bolts are still tight as per the install sheet suggests I'm going to take another look at my Fricken Y-Pipe to see how large the pipe is going from Headers to the Cat's. Maybe I can have the small pipes cut off right at the ends of the Cat's and have wider pipes installed going that route.

We'll see..

Jim, I'm not suggesting that you add larger pipe just replace the crush bent tubes with mandrel bends. The JBA pipe in my picture is the same diameter as the stock pipe. It just doesn't have the restricted bends and flattened areas.
