To see the "trouble code". Turn the ignition key from off to on three times. Leave it in the on position on the third time. The trouble code will show in the odometer window.

Then go to www.obdii.com and look up the code. This will tell you what the problem is and may enable you to "talk turkey" with the dealer.

Good Luck

The voltage the sensor sends to the computer varies according to the amount of oxygen it senses. The computer reads this voltage and converts it to an oxygen level, so it knows how much fuel to inject. If the voltage sent to the computer drops below the minumum, the computer assumes the sensor is bad and sends the code for bad O2 sensor. There are other things to cause this. If there is corrosion on the lead wire or wiring harness, the coputer may be sensing little or no voltage. If the lead wire is grounded or broken is another. Corrosion doesn't always have to be visible. I have seen wires that look fine at the end, but are corroded several inches up into to insulation. There is a way to test the sensors with a torch and a meter. Heat the sensor tip until red hot. The meter should read 600mv DC. Now move the flame around on the tip removing it and moving it back. The voltage should change quickly. If not, it's bad. You can also check the heater by checking resistance accross the heater leads. If it's infinite, it's bad. Use only a high impedence digital meter, any other kind will fry the sensor. Just remember that a computer code just points you in the right direction. There are many things associated with the item listed in the code that could be causing the problem.

Note to above post:
The last O2 sensor I tested was for my old Subaru. The 600mv may not be correct. I just read my notes and didn't change the number. The voltage for the Dakota may be different. The important thing to watch for is a rapid change in voltage when the heat is removed. If it drops slowly, it's bad.

1st question: did you get the codes cleared after you changed your O2 sensor?

2nd question: if you did do the above, check your TPS, MAP, or MAF sensor, any autozone can test those items to make sure they are in spec. If your computer is getting the wrong signals coming in (in reference to O2 intake) the O2 sensor will give you the wrong readings going out. Your O2 sensor may not be the problem, but it may be the only thing registering a problem.

If the garage says there is no problem, and just keeps reseting the light, I'd say the problem lies with your choice of garage.

There are rare cases where service engine lights can be a bear to fix, but 99% of the time, it's not a big deal. It's not exactly brain surgery ya know :)

Cats are bad about setting O2 codes. If the cats are not performing properly it will trigger a slow or erratic responce from the rear sensors. I've replaced cat assemblies under warranty on vehicles with as little as 9000 miles on them! If you live in the South East, the fuel quality will wreak havock on your EVAP and emissions systems. Take it from me, use premium fuels from Shell, Chevron or Amaco! I have spent hours cleaning peoples fuel systems out due to poor fuel. ALSO... for God's sake... change your fuel filter, if yours is serviceable, every 15000 miles!

My $.02

thats really good advise! remove your fuel tank every 15000 miles just to replace the fuel pump as the filter sock is permanently attachted to it. must not be a dak mechanic.

Your right, I'm not a Dak mechanic! I'm a real mechanic that happens to be a Dak driver and enthusiast. If you cleaned the cum out of your eyes you would notice the "if yours is serviceable" statement.

Plus you dumb f*ck, it isn't a "sock", it is a large, non-serviceable filter attached to the sender assembly. Only vehicles with external filters have "socks" in the tank to catch debris large enough to damage your fuel pump.

At least use a name when you show your stupidity so people know not to waste their time reading your $.02!

This post is for advice, not for your pathetic attempts to chime in on subjects you are not mentally equiped to participate in.

Now go back to your room little boy before I call Koby and tell him you are home alone!

Thanks to the help above I found P0720 code showing the Output Shaft Speed Sensor Circuit for my 2000 RT 5.9. Found one at O'Reilly Auto Parts for 15.99. Auto Zone has them for 21.99. The next problem was locating it. I found it on the driver's side of the transmission. Unplugged the wire, used a 1" boxed in wrench and 5 minutes later on the road. Oh yea, disconnect the battery cable to reset the light. Chrysler service estimated $100.00 after I identified the problem to them. Thanks for the shove in the right direction.

Jer - the tip "Dakaty" posted for reading the code works for '00 and newer - you'll have to get whatever code is setting the mil read somewhere.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Sneeky test for the O2 Sensor wiring. Disconnect the sensor wiring from the sensor, insert a length of wire into the harness side of the connector(the output lead, not the heater!)then, start the engine. while standing away from the body, hold the stripped wire in one hand, while touching the positive battery cable with the other hand. You should hear a definate change in engine RPM...and in most cases the engine will stall due to going to an over lean condition. Test all the O2 sensors, if you get no response from one...check the wiring.
