Subject: Why change oil every 3000 miles IP: Logged
Message: I always used to change my oil every 5000 miles per manufacturers recomendations. Since the quick oil change places took over in the late 90's everyone is recomending 3000 miles, what's up with that? Has oil gotten that bad or is this just a ploy to get everyone to change thier oil before they need to. I understand if i had a 240 HP turbo charged 4 cyl but my motor has never reved over 4800 rpms

Message: Some people believe in better safe than sorry. Personally, I don't worry about and every vehicle that I have kept for a long period has reached 200k with no problems.
I don't know what you mean by the "90's," but since unleaded became popular the frequency has gone down. Prior to the late 70's it was almost mandatory to change your oil every 3000 miles if not sooner. Engines were much more dirty then and getting 100k out of one was some sort of merical.
It's a personal choice.

Message: I depends on your driving style. If you do alot of city driving,or short trip driving. I would change it every 3,000 miles. If your doing alot of highway driving,I think you would be fine with 5,000 miles changes. Your oil isn't subjected(or your car) to the abuses of stop and go driving, and not warming up to temp. with short trip driving.

Message: Mostly it's marketing. If they could, Jiffey Lube would want you to come in every month for an oil change. If I owned a Jiffey Lube, I would too.
But the fact is that you just don't need to. Even the factory recommendations are very conservative, and they say every 5K miles. Some engines (like my wife's Cougar) say every 7,500 miles. Read your owner's manual, and follow that.

Message: many years ago consumer reports did a test of motor oil using taxi's in nyc. all the vehicles had new engines installed and then they let em rip. the end result was that on dino oil 6,000 mi between oil changes was about the limit. this was done before the introduction of all the synthetic oils though. i do mine on the 5,000. ie: 5,000 10,000 15,000 etc, very easy to keep track of that way. doing it more often was just an uneccessary expendature.

Message: I HATE chinging the oil every time I turn around.
I've finally got Amsoil in both of my Dodge vehicles. Doing 15k changes now and filter/top off at 7500
Amsoil claims you CAN go up to 25k intervals.

Message: Amsoil is the only way to go. I have used it for 15 years in all of my vehicles. You can even get a by-pass system and go 100k between oil changes. Just change the filters once a year. I had that on my '98 Ram, but it won't fit in my '05 Dakota V8. So, If Amsoil says their oil can go 100K miles with by-pass filtering, 25K miles is a no brainer! Also install an Amsoil Lifetime Air filter for added protection!

Message: I only put 8500 miles a year so far on my 03. So I change mine every 3000 with Mobil 1 synthetic just to keep it fresh.

Message: I use right now M-1 5w-30. because no one sells amsoil around here. when I went to my dodge dealership. they sell amsoil now. might see how much they charge. I hate waiting for mail order stuff. now my question is if that dodge dealership sells it then they endorse it and back their long oil change interval? so it wont hurt my warranty right? lol
