Message: Well, I've got a 2wd, QC, 4.7, manual, and a tranny shop in San Antonio cut mine out, put in an aluminized pipe, all for $30.
Incidentally, the third cat is only for start up emissions, I guess in cold climates, as the two pre casts on the headers do the trick.

Message: I had a noticible difference on my 2001 4.7L dakota QC, and 1-2 mpg's, I brought mine to a muffler shor and for $40 cash it was done. If you already have 2 why would it be illegal as long as you still have the other 2? I cut mine off after i cut the muffler and it was still too quiet.

Message: I used to be heavy into modifying 5.0L mustang, and did all kinds of research. Basically, ANY read as ANY modification to emissions equipment is completely illegal at the federal level and CA level. Which usually means, NY, MA, CT, etc... I used to live in MA. The practical answer is-- who's checking? If your state doesn't do a visual inspection and the truck passes emissions, you should be good to go. Not long after I traded my mustang for a Dakota, I drove off the road and over a guardrail at 50mph during a black ice storm. Nothing I could do about it. $11,000 of damage later, I had enough. I had truck back and running and moved the heck out of that cold a** commie state. I now live in sunny, beautifully red-neck (read: NON-commie) north FL where my 4x4 comes in handy at the beach for pulling my ski, and don't have to worry about the emissions. I'm planning on doing this soon, but thinking of fabbing up a dual exhaust.
At any rate, to make a short story long, remove it, but save it for your emissions test, if your state is strict, you may need to bolt it back in.

Message: I'm still in MA, where are all these commies ? Does PA test like MA ? Here if you have OBDii, they only check to see if the mil lamp is functioning properly, and randomly back that up with a sniffer test. I heard at least 17 other states are now testing like that, they wouldn't likely catch it in MA.

Message: FYI,
ALL NEW MEXICANS
you will fail the e-test if the third cat is cut-out/missing. we are required to check a visual on all 3 cats.

so boring out wouldn't cause a problem as long as
the exhaust is being burned properly by your two "mini" cats.

Message: Cutting the third cat off is a pain. You can remove the transmission brace. I put my tire jack underneath to hold the tranny in place. The brace should come right off.
As performance, i can feel a difference in power above 4K in second and third gear. It pulls harder. On tanks where i am not romping on it i have gained a little over one mile per gallon.
