Subject: 1991 Dak 5.2 Stalling in hot weather

Message:
I was wondering if anyone else has run into this problem. I was out driving in the heat yesterday, and the engine all of a sudden shut off. After 5 minutes, it restarted. It ran for a couple minutes, then shut off again. It did this maybe 10 times, until I got home. It wouldn't restart until it sat for 5 minutes or so.

It was too hot to touch, so I didn't look to see if it had any spark. I think it was running out of gas, because after it restarted each time, it seemed real rich at first.

The only thing I have done is look for a code, and I came up with 32. I think it says 'check EGR circuit'. Do those solenoids go bad in the heat?

I've had it 2 years, and put maybe 5,000 miles on it with no problems. I have done nothing in the way of tune-up, fuel pump, or the like. It has 111,000 miles on the clock.

Do the Dakota ball-joint problems go back this old?

I have a 92 DAk 5.2 that did something similar. It was the computer. Is your MFI or TBI.

I had this happen to my 91 twice. The first time it was the Hall Effect sensor in the distributor, the second time it was the computer. If you have a multi-meter and a haynes manual you can test almost all of the sensors. Good Luck with the fix.

replace your egr. a bad one will cause stalling. if that doesn't work, look at your fuel filter (on the frame under and behind driver).

yeah, the egr will cause stalling. But I think he said sometimes it would not START until it cooled down. That usually indicates a bad hall effect sensor (cam sensor/crank sensor, etc) or like they said, distributor sensor whith would be the simplest.

I don't think it's any big deal to go off buying a "Chebby". They all have parts that wear out. Chevy's favorite thing is the fuel pump that dies WITHOUT EXCEPTION and with NO WARNING at 80K to 100K miles.

This thing has gotten worse. Today it cut out, and the starter wouldn't even crank over. I let it sit for about 30 min.s and it acted normal. Also it is pinging when accellerating, and again when you let off the gas.

Is it true that the computer controls the advance curve for ignition?

I have myself convinced it is the computer. Is it better to get one from the dealer, or go to NAPA for a rebuilt one?

We have a 1991 Dakota 5.2 that quit--driving down the road, & wouldn't start. My friend installed a new ignition switch because that was what someone said was the problem. Started several times, ran good. Then died again driving down the road.

We had a mobile diagnostic guy come check it. He found two wires down by the transmission were stuck together. He pulled them apart, & it started immediately. He also said that it is rare for a computer to fail. That was going to our next step. We were running out of ideas too. Might be worth getting a mobile automotive diagnostic on it. Good luck!

Carol, there is a wiring splice you probably need to check. it is about 8-10 inches below the PDC(power distribution center) on the drivers side fenderwell. peel the tape back and you'll find it. if it is corroded redo the splice, preferably soldering the connections and re-tape.

Thanks! We'll try that too. We're getting to the point that my friend wants to get rid of the Dakota, but I love our little blue truck, & hate the thought of getting rid of it. But we have to have a truck that is reliable & can tow a trailer most of the time. Thanks again.

It quit again while going down the road, after it had run for several days.

My friend took apart the fuse link wire, checked the continuity at both ends. It checked okay. Was that the splice you were talking about?

I had forgot to say it blows ignition 40 amp fuse in the control box.

Any other thoughts? We're still wondering about replacing the computer. Would that take care of the problem? Has anybody else gone through this?
Thanks.

the PCM's rarely go bad on these things.
that fusible link is not what i was talking about. i'm talking about a splice in the wiring below the PDC on the drivers fender. it's 3 or 4 smaller wires spliced to one larger wire. you'll have to unwrap the bundle of wires there to get to it.

Is there any way to check the computer to see if it is causing these problems? Before we go buy a computer at NAPA for it?

dealer may be able to check the pcm but as i mentioned earlier, it is highly unlikely that it is the problem.

My 1991 Dodge Dakota (V8 with power windows) is doing EXACTLY the same as Scottowl's.

The engine stalls randomly as I drive down the road. It often will not re-start for 5-30 minutes of cooling off. The engine seems very hot but not to the point of overheating. It seems like the problem is worse when it is very hot, humid or rainy.

After almost a month of this (and a new battery, alternator and battery cables) it seems to be getting worse. My brake/anti lock lights are on at all times - but I have new brakes that work fine.

I took it to the shop today the mechanic told me this is the second times he's seen this problem on this type of vehicle...and nobody could fix it last time! PLEASE help!

Check the wiring harness leaving the underhood fusebox. About 6 inches down there is a splice of 3 wires to 1 red or red/white. Rework the splice.
