hey i dont under stand last nite i raced my friends 95 3.8l firebird with my 5.9l r/t and he took me off the line and i couldnt keep up with him my truck is stock and the only mods he has is a cold air intake and a 80 series flowmaster and he cut the cat off his car and put straigh pipe in its place is this normal my truck doesnt have alot of miles

Sounds like you need some work unless he has the turbocharged version. He weighs in at about 3300 lbs. with 200hp. If he's beating you, you are putting out less than 225hp.
In street racing there are more factors than horsepower but that's a fairly close picture.

yeah sounds like he had the grand national motor in his firebird. only thing it could be. you mean its your friend and yo udont know whats under the hood?
is the firebird a formula and white? if so its the aniversery model and had that grand nation turbo charged V-6. I dont know what year the aniversery model was or how long they offered the turbo v-6 in the firebird. also he could of put and aftermarket turbo too.
either way you got humbled =-Þ just because its a a 5.9 doesnt mean it will win every match.

There was no grand national motor ever in a firebird. those v6 camaro's/firebird's are quicker than people think they run high 15's stock not to mention he has cold air intake an exhaust.

JD I beg to differ. in the firebird formula aniversery (sorry for the spelling) special they put the grand national V-6 Turbo motor in that firebird.

The Turbo Trans Am was in 1989. The 3.8s in the 96 and up are NA. The 95 Firebirds came with 3.4 liter V6s 160hp (if memory serves correct). Someone is lying to someone.

My buddy had that same firebird with the 3.8 in it and it wasnt to impressive. It couldnt hang with my moms 4.0 explorer and could barely beat my dads 98 sable with a v6 which i think is a 3.2. Even my old 2.2 S10 with a 5spd could take it off the line through first and most of second gear. Oh and his firebird also had CAI and 40 series flowmaster.

his is a 95 with the 3.8l they did put the 3.8s in the 95s the 96 is when they put in the newer kinda 3.8l i guess i looked over the firebird so i know its a 3.8l no turbo i drove it a couple of times and its pritty quick when he took the cat off that made a realy big diff

f-bodies are a strange breed, V6 or 8. sometimes they come off the assembly line like freaks, some are normal, and some are duds. luck of the draw.
when i saw the title to this thread i thought it was going to be someone from where im at, i have a friend with a v6 bird that runs low low 13s. :)

ok I forgot about the 89 they ran 13's but I knew they were turbo just didn't know it was a grand national motor. but he did cleary type 95 which there was no turbo that year.

Why would they (GM) ever make the V6 Model beat the V8's? They had two versions of V8's (the 305 & 350), so if you could buy a V6 Firebird/Camaro that runs low 15's (stock) then it beat their 305 version. So, why would anyone buy a V8 if you can get better performance and GAS milage out of a 6? Makes no sense to me. Plus insurance and overall pricetag was MUCH CHEAPER. I never heard of them putting the Grand National Engine in any Firebird or Camaro, though I could be wrong. I would of bought one of those over my 91 Z. The Anniverasary of the Camaro/Firebird was in 92.

I believe they may have put the GN engine in a trans am back in the mid to late 80's. I may be mistaken, but they didn't make many of them.

Yup, it was an 89 Turbo T/A. GM dynoed it at just over 300 hp and 340 ft lb.

actually the late 80's turbo trans am's were 301 v8's. the last year for the buick gran national was '87 and they made a few special GNX's that were modestly rated @ 250hp and blew away any production car that year.

My buddy had a 87 305 camaro stock and raced this kid with a 92+ v6 camaro the newer v6 camaro won. The old 305's only had 190hp and 295tq the v6 where close to those numbers and in a lighter body.

yeah, i have a 2000 v6 convertible(auto) and i race my friends 95 3.4 camaro all the time and that thing kicks my ass of the line but i usually pass him after 30 mph, but all i know is when i had my 93, 318 dakota that thing felt much quicker than my stang but i dont know how much faster the 3.8 firebirds are

I have a 88 firebird I race. Stock it had a 350 but through those years they just wernt that fast 305 or 350. Thats when they came out with the turbo T/A i have only seen 2 in my life. One made me want to cry cause it was so friggin beat and the other was museum quality. 12s are possible in those cars with a minimum amount of work. I wish i would have saved for one instead of my firebird GTA.

It was the early 80's I believe that had the turbo V8. Almost bought one (used at the time) in the later 80's but didn't. I didn't think it was all that fast when I test drove it. I bet the Turbo V6 was faster than the old turbo V8.
Out here at Speedworld there are occasionally a bunch of Grand Nationals that run around 10's but they are tweeked. Still. Sad to see something that doesn't even have a mean exhaust sound run like hell.

I think grand nationals sound pretty mean. You dont really hear the exhaust but you can here that boost. You would think a jet is flying over you until you see that car is just running down the track.
