Subject: Check Engine Light, Code 88888.8

Message:
I've been getting a check engine light, with a code of 88888.8 and I'll clear the code and it comes back in 20-350 miles. Most of the time I'll see it appear when I've been at idle while sitting at a stop sign. I am the second owner of this truck and I think the previous owner had taken out the original stereo and then put it back in before he traded it, because lately it has been acting up as well. I'm just wondering if by doing this, he may have caused the present problem? Oh, the problem with the radio or stereo is that suddenly the while listening to the radio it suddenly drops to static and you cannot change the channel or use the CD player. While that problem exists, if I shut off the ignition and back on I'll either get no display, but the CD player will play, or it will come on with the display reset. Anyone with any recommendations on what I should do in either case?

As far as I know, that's not even a valid DTC. How are you checking the code? Have you tried manually running the routine to check for codes? You know, turn the ignition on, off, on, off and on. After the third on sequence the odometer should display a code like Pxxxx, where xxxx=a 4 digit number between 0010 and 2599.
Have you had your charging system and battery tested? Your symptoms almost sound like you're disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it. Does your truck run or idle erratically when this happens? After you have one of these episodes, are your tripmeters reset to 0?

Wrong, to get the code from a '99 Dakota you press and hold the Odometer reset, then turn on the ignition and release after the word "CHEC" shows up, after about 6 seconds. The way you stated works on earlier years. Anyway, that's when I get the 888888.8 to show up. If I check it at Advance Auto or Auto Zone, I just get an error.

What!? Earlier models? Chrysler OBDII vehicles since 1996 use this procedure. I have a 2000 and that's how I retrieve DTC's. Did you even try what I said? Unless the R/T is special, you're retrieving your codes the wrong way. Anyone else with an R/T want to chime in?

On many 2001 and newer models, holding in the trip odometer reset button while turning the key to RUN will start a self test, with a readout on the odometer. It will also activate all instrument panels, one at a time. We do not know if this will show computer codes, or whether it only tests the instrument panels. At the end, it may show a few odd codes that are firmware versions and not error codes.
On most cars, the codes will read out if the engine light is on - all you have to do is put the key into the RUN position.
Normally, to get codes, you put the key on OFF and then rapidly do OFF-ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON (on some cars you have to do four or five, not three, OFF-ON cycles). On our test 2002 car, the key did not go back to unlock, so it was ACC-ON-ACC-ON-ACC-ON.

I got this off of allpar.com,go there to find out more.....

Here is the address I got the directions to get the codes: http://www.dodgeforum.com/m_115986/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#115986

Directions:
How to check codes on a 1999 Dodge

The 1999 Dodge Dakota shop manual, page 8E-6 has the following self diagnostic test that checks the instrument cluster and CCD data bus message-controlled indicator lamps, for the other codes a DRB scan tool is required.

NOTE: If the ignition switch is turned to the off position during this test, or if a Vehicle speed message indicating the vehicle is moving is received from the PCM on the CCD data bus during the test, repeat test if required.

This is one continuous test
1. Ignition switch off
2. Press and hold the trip reset knob
3. Turn the ignition switch to on but do not start.
4. Hold the reset knob for approx 10 seconds or until the word CHEC appears in the display then release.

then when you have your code, check it here

http://www.obdii.com/codes.html

I tried the other ways that you have discribed and they didn't work.

I wanted to finish this thread off, as I finally found the solution to the problem and the sad thing was it was simpler that anyone could have dreamed. While laying under my truck and looking at the sensor, I noticed that the plug for the sensor had a post for mounting it on the truck, but there was no where around to mount it, so for the time being, I wire tied it to the transmission. Now it's been over 500 miles and it hasn't come back on. I guess the fault was so quick that it wouldn't even register a valid fault.

I get the same 88888.8 code. I ran it and all I can come up with is generator lamp? Sounds bogus to me but that's what comes up. I have a 1999 Dak RT. Did the trip hold down for 10 secs and turned the key on. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Jerry
