Subject: Front diff noise IP: Logged
Message: I have a '01 Dakota Quad Cab, 4.7, 4x4, with 84k miles on it. Recently I had to have the rear diff replaced (under warranty). There was a slight humming coming from the rear end when I took it to the dealer. They said I needed a complete overhaul. There were metal pieces in the diff and everything.
Now there seem to be that same noise (but louder) comming from my front diff. I haven't used 4 wheel drive since the winter except just recently to switch it from 2 wheel to 4 wheel and then back again after first hearing the humming.
The truck doesn't seem to be stuck in 4 wheel drive (takes turns easily) so I don't think the switch is faulty.
But why would I have this noise coming from my front diff if it isn't in 4 wheel drive?

Message: I can't help you with your problems, but how much did the overhaul for the rear diff cost. The dealer just found metal in mine.
thanks

Message: It was still under warranty but it would've been over $1,000 with parts/labor etc.

Message: I would go to an off road shop to have an over haul done on the differentials. I had new gears and seals installed on my truck (2004 QC 4x4 4.7) and the total was under $1400.00 total for both axels. The dealer will rip you off on these things.

Message: check your fluid. most likely you either have low fluid level, or water in the fluid. i think its smoked anyway though. dont overhaul both diff's if you just had it done.
