Subject: yup....gas...whooda thunk it? IP: Logged
Message: ok...i have a 1997 5.2 liter v8 dodge dakota. And apparently it
gets bad gas mileage...im not sure how bad it is...but its about 15
miles to the gallon or less i believe. if theres any advice on how to
save gas i would greatly appreciate it...and another thing, when i
run the truck on higher octane fuels it seems to get better gas
mileage than on lower, is this even possible?
Thanks,
Ky-man

Message: The best way to get better gas milage, is to buy a Jap bike or car, PERIOD.
APPERANTLY???? All V8's get "bad" gas mileage.
Then again, it depends on how deep your pockets are. Whats bad mileage and expensive for one is'nt so bad for the other!!!

Message: How many miles on that engine? If high octane improves your mileage, it's probably because you're knocking and pinging on lower octane fuel. Is your engine running hot? Try 100% synthetic fluid in your drivetrain, free-flowing exhaust, cold-air intake system, Autolite 3923 sparkplugs, new cap, rotor and wires. Are you burning oil? Those 3.9, 5.2 & 5.9 engines tend to blow out the belly pan gasket, causing them to suck oil from the crankcase which negatively effects mileage and usually results in ping (detonation or preignition). Keep your tires inflated to the proper pressure. Also, driving habits effect the mileage considerably. Try to coast when you can. Never accelerate toward a red light, use your common sense when driving for mileage, otherwise don't expect great gas mileage. Good luck!

Message: And I thought 15 mpg was good milage for a truck of my Dak's capabilities. One of my first cars was a GM with a 350 - lighter vehicle, less power, worse gas milage (12). Kind of puts things in perspective - if you need a truck with a v-8, you're going to use some gas. Now I have a heavier, more powerful vehicle that gets better milage - no complaint here.

Message: Yeah..you're right, i LOVE my truck, its freakin' awesome with all it
can do and all the power it has. No offense to the people that have
one, but when i see a ford ranger with a 4 cylinder lifted it makes
me giggle. Then when i look at my truck and know how it handles
and how it performs, i simply smile, because it's an awesome
dependable truck.
almost 200,00 miles and still going strong,
Ky-man
