Subject: Where do you get a RobertShaw 180!? IP: Logged
Message: I've been running a Stant 65358 thermostat in my 2000 4.7 for the last year and this summer it's not doing the job. We're having hotter than normal weather but my temperature went up to 240 cruising on the interstate a couple times before the heat really hit us. I think my thermostat is getting flakey, the electric fan was running and it cooled down once I got off the interstate and stopped for a few minutes. I took the clutch-fan off lastyear but hadn't driven in this kind of heat since then. However, driving along at 70 on the interstate should have been enough forced air through the radiator to keep the engine cool. When I popped open the hood, the overflow bottle didn't have anymore coolant in it than it does when the engine 's cold but the heat coming out of the engine compartment felt like a blast furnace. I sprayed some distilled water on different areas and the water pump was very hot, when I sprayed enough water to fill the area in the bleed screw, it boiled over and vaporized almost immediately. Anyway, I want to replace that Stant with a RobertShaw and I can't find anyone that carries RS thermostats except a racing parts store that carries RS 160's for Ford and Chevy (they'd probably work but it does get cold around here in the winter). You guys running the RobertShaw 180 in your 4.7, where did you buy your thermostats from?

Message: I did a search and found on another thread that RobertShaw was bought out by Cooper Standard. WTF! Everyone around here carries Stant. It's like Cooper bought the thermostat factory but doesn't sell any thermostats? At least not around here.

Message: I bought a high flow balanced thermostat made by Mr. Gasket from Summit Racing. I drove down from Denver yesterday afternoon. Air temps right around 100*. Speed around 80mph. No problems at all.

Message: .boB, do you remember if it was the Mr. Gasket 4367 that fits the 4.7 Magnum? If not, what was the part number?

Message: I have a 5.9, so I can't speak with authority. But I read here that the parts are interchangable between the two engines, you just had to cut a small slot on the base plate to fit the 4.7.

Message: Advanced Auto Parts - Kragen, etc. Part 755-180. Now marketed under the Prestone and Fram brands. This is the part number for the magnum engines, not sure if it will also work on the 4.7

Message: That's the Stant or regular style thermostat. If you've ever seen the RobertShaw performance thermostat you'll understand why I want that style instead of the ordinary thermostat which is cheap but also less reliable and less effective in hot weather. I've had quite a few Stant thermostats fail closed and blow out intake manifold gasket (Ford 302 engine). Look at this picture, the whole balanced sleeve opens up allowing about twice the coolant flow. http://www.cooperstandard.com/us/en/images/Fluid/Aftermarket/thermostat2.gif

Message: Yes, that's exactly what I have in my truck. Marketed under the Mr. Gasket line.
Do a search on this board. There was some talk about interchangability between the 5.9 and the 4.7.

Message: Actually, the Prestone 755-180 is the Robert Shaw. It has already been proven. Exact same item. The box even says Robert Shaw on it if you buy one. Unfortunately the only place I have found them is the Advance Auto Parts family of stores, and there are none by me. A couple other guys have bought them and confirmed it first hand.

Message: Intersting. That looks like a pretty good t-stat compared to the basic cheapo.
Has anyone noticed on our 4.7 stock one there is a EXTENSION on the sensor?
I kind of wonder how accurate our 180 t-stats are without that extension?
If you look closely to the left of the t-stat, it has an extension on the sensor.
This side doesn't look much different. That's the t-stat I swapped in. It's been in there for a few years now. I once tried a 160. Got paranoid and threw this 180 back in.

Message: The extension is supposedly a valve that extends into the waterpump bypass hole to cut the flow by 50% as the temperature increases. I put the stock, operating Tstat in a pot of boiling water and it barely opened. I also couldn't tell if the valve moved at all. I don't understand completely how the thing about the waterpump bypass works because the service manual doesn't explain it very well.
