Subject: First Oil Change on High Mileage Dakota IP: Logged
Message: I am going to do my first oil change on my 1995 Dodge Dakota with the 5.2L engine and 120,000 miles and was just wondering what would be the best oil and oil filter to use? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Usually I just go to Jiffy Lube and get the High Mileage oil change but I'm tired of paying $50, so any ideas?

Message: As far as the oil, I'd use Amsoil or M1, both full synthetic.
There's not really anything wrong with other brands, these are
just the best both in testing, and my expirence.
I'd have to suggest not using a K&N filter for the oil. It is
intended more for race applications and to only be used for a
short amount of mileage. No offence to lacent, but I've just
heard too many stories of people who change the oil and find
that the filter has broken apart. It does allow the oil to flow
better, but it also lets more junk through. You really wont see
any change in performance. I'd also have to suggest not using
the cheap Fram filter. Other than that its pretty much a toss up
between the filters. I haven't heard anything especially great
about any one brand.

Message: New Mobil 1 synthetic and an Autozone STP oil filter. The Autozone filters used to be manufactured by Deutsch Precision and were of high quality, especially for the price 2/$5 or $2.99 each. STP bought Deutsch Precision's operation and now sells them as STP oil filters.
Pretty much any oil with the proper API certification or rating will do if you change the oil regularly. Synthetic provides that extra protection because it doesn't have the same negative properties of petroleum products and I believe are cleaner from the start.
The filter is the next big factor, maybe even more important than the oil. If you've seen the filter comparision displays, some filters are just plain junk. Don't forget to recycle that oil. Good luck!

Message: WOW, I was going to bag on ya for doing your 1st oil change at 120K miles,,, then I realized "YOU" are going to do your first oil change with the truck at 120K... LOL
Anywhoo, I would use Mobil 1 because it's a pretty inexpensive true synthetic, $20/5 quarts at Wal-Mart. When I bought my 03 I decided to go all Amsoil, but after 8-10K the engine oil just looked too dark to let it go any longer, I decided to go back to Mobil 1 for the engine oil since the Amsoil was getting to scarry looking to run it any longer. 25K or 1 year for Amsoil engine oil,,, not in my truck.
Filters are a toss up, but anything cheap is going to be, well, cheap. I'd expect to pay $6-8 for a good filter, Wix and Hastings come to mind as good companies. I usually stop by Carquest once a year and pick up several oil filters, they are Wix filters repackaged under the Carquest label.

Message: just because the oil is black doesn't mean its bad, infact the only way to tell if its bad it to do an oil test on it. I can't remember but turning black is normal, my amsoil 5-30 is rated for 25k miles and the filter is rated for 12.5k. I would only use that oil change if using the amsoil filter.
amsoil #1 mobil 1 second, mobil 1 filter or amsoil filter
