Message: Towing my boat this last weekend, my 4.7 Auto, tow package, QC overheated while going up Hwy 50 out of Placerville. The check gauges light came on and I pulled over. The temp was at the high end of the normal range and went down at idle after several minutes; also the check gauge light went off. All fans were working. Did the same thing going up Ice House Road. Flat driving, the temperature stays 1/3 of the scale with a rise to 1/2 on small grades. I assumed the Tstat was not opening. The truck has 76K miles and this is the first time this has happened. What is the method for draining all the antifreeze from everything? I replaced the Tstat and only got 1.5 gal from the hose. The book indicates it should have 17 Qts in the system. What is normal Dodge 'orange' and can I mix 'green' with it? Anything additional things I should check. Haven’t has a chance to drive to check if the Tstat fixed it. Thanks

Message: There are block plugs (threaded) that have to be removed to get all the coolant out.
Try turning off overdrive when going up those grades, and don't use the a/c on the grades either. See if that makes a difference.

Message: HotStuff: Nether the OD off or the AC off made any difference other than slow down the time for overheating. Even turnning the heater on made any diffrernce.
Thanks for the info:

Message: yea uh... change out the fluid and put a new t-stat in it. look into the radiator when its drained. if the core looks corroded, thats gonna make it overheat under heavy loads. then post up on if that worked.

Message: I changed out the 'T'stat and it seams that it was the problem. I did heat the old one up, but it was very hot when it finely opened up. The radiator looked fine to me. Thanks for the advice.
