Subject: Questions on Shelby Dakota IP: Logged
Message: I've read several of the old posts on the Sheby Dakotas. What is a Shelby Dakota worth? I found a Shelby Dakota this weekend and was curious. Condition is 6 or 7 out of 10. 126K miles. Is it different performance wise than my 92 Dakota Sport?
Thanks,

Message: Stock Shelby Daks were rated at 175HP with the LA 318. One like you describe isn't gonna rate for much $. Eventually, they may begin to appreciate, but for now they rate only slightly higher than the V6 Dakota Sport of the same vintage. A good one is only about $2500 blue book, give or take. Shelbys had some tranny tweaking for firm shifts, a hi-stall torque converter (about 2,000 rpm stall), and 3.90 gears with a limited slip diff. At the time, it was considered pretty quick, with 0-60 around 8.7 sec, with 1/4 mile of 16.4 around 86mph. Not all that bad considering aerodynamics like a brick, a pre-Magnum 318, and 3,600 lb curb weight.
On the upside, there are some great tranny pieces out there now to make the A500 much more durable, and a Magnum engine will slip right in (Mine has a 360 Magnum now), not to mention any LA engine (like a hot 340 or 360 or any of the stroker packages for the Mopar smallblock).

Message: i just got a shelby dakota for 2500 plus TTL(#1432), and it didnt come with a owners manual, what kind of transmission fluid does it take and what kinds of mods can i do to the engine, besides intake outake exhaust, i know pre magnum 5.2 had limited abilities but there has to be something i can do to make it powerful, mopar staff at mopar.com was telling me to just do a engine swap, but thats bogus, their has to be something reasonable. and i have some engine knowledge and NOS is bout all i can think of at this point

Message: CompCams 254HR-12 with matching springs. It will work with the stock computer and gives a healthy increase in valve lift, so the 318 will definitely perk up. Clean up the heads with a good performance valve job. Custom headers if you wish to retain the stock emissions setup. If not, any stock Magnum exhaust manifolds flow better than pre-Magnum. With very minor grinding on the intake, a 360 TBI from the same time period will work. Just add a 360 computer (again, from that time period), and tie in an aftermarket thermostat control for the electric fan (since the other trucks didn't have electric fans, the other computers won't activate yours). Mopar Performance even offered the 360 TBI, matching computer, and a Flowmaster muffler as an aftermarket upgrade back then). When the rear end needs work, you may even want to gear up to something in the 3.55 range to better take advantage of the low end grunt from the LA-318.
The tranny needs what all later overdrive units use, which is now ATF+4. To help it live longer, ditch that factory tranny gooler, and get a real one. Also install the TransGo tranny kit.
Also, you can manually advance your initial ignition timing a few degrees. This unit still responded (it was the last version to allow this) to giving the distributor a twist (there's a bolt back there holding it in place-FYI). The computer on the Shelby's already had a more aggressive ignition routine, so premium is required anyway. It'll run on regular thanks to a knock sensor (the Magnum engines don't have this--go figure), but it'll be a pig. It'll run better and get better mileage on premium.

Message: Their a great little truck.Get rid of those ex manifolds, use headers or big truck ex.manifold.Put a 360 TB on it with a aftermarket intake. To make it fit i just made a adapter out of 3/4 in. flat alum.Iam using the Lunati voodoo cam because it still gives you plenty of vacume.Iam still using the stock computer and iam running a 340 stroked to a 418,with a fastman 55mm TB.If you dont want to use headers ive got a set of those big truck(ram) manifolds.CHEAP
