Subject: Idle problem HELP

97 5.2 slt rwd 113,000 miles ...Especially when engine is cold it idles rough. smooths out a bit when warmed up. but still exists. runs fine at any speed ...no hesitation when taking off from a stop nor when crusing at highway speeds...

what could be the problem? New cap,rotor,plugs,wires and coil,air filter and pcv 5,000 miles ago truck has always ran great up until this week.

any help appreciated.

Have you cleaned the throttle body plates, the IAC and the tb air bypass port near where the IAC is located?

Hey Joe, I had a '95 5.2 that did the same thing. I pulled the intake thinking it was the belly pan gasket and found my intake to head gasket was split. Other than the idle symptoms you have, mine also had low compression on that cylinder due to oil vapors being sucked into the cylinder.
after a new gasket and freeing the rings she ran like a champ

Investigate the easy stuff first, vaccum leaks, electrical wiring, as Ticats suggested clean the T/B will not hurt a thing. Check the fuel pressure, contrary to another post the PCM does not monitor fuel pressure. The pressure should be 49 psi + or - 5 psi with the ignition off it should hold pressure for several minuts,if not this could indicate a leaking injector which can cause a rough idle.
