Subject: Just bought a '92 Dakota & I have some ? IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys, I just found this board. I just bought a black 1992 Dodge Dakota V8 2WD that has 74k miles on it. I am looking to soup it up a bit & I was wondering if you guys could help me out by suggesting what I should do.
Right now it is stock, except for a K&N air filter. Heres what I plan on doing...
-1 Can of Seafoam into the gas tank on next fill up
-1/3 can of Seafoam into the vac line
-1/3 can of Seafoam into the crankcase
-Custom make some battery cables from #2 cable with marine terminals.
-Change the oil to Mobile 1 Synthetic & put a puralator oil filter on
Now here are my questions...
1. I have been thinking about opening up the throttle body. What is the optimal size to go to & do I need it tapered or can it be a straight dia?
2. Will I need a TB spacer after I do this?
3. What is the best product to detail the engine with?
4. Am I allright with the stock intake tube & the K&N filter, or should I upgrade to a FIPK or the 360?
5. In your opinion, what octaine fuel should I be using with this? I don't race it, but it is my daily drive to work.
6. Should I go with a net style tailgate, or leave the stock one on?
7. Are there any more sights that would have how to's for mods on the Dakota around?
8. Are any of the resistor, TPS, Powerchip mods worth it?
9. Would I benifit by putting in a new thermostat? What temp should I get?
Thanks for the help brothers!

Message: I also have a 92' so I'll answer some of your questions.
I'd be hesitant to put full synthetic oil in a 14 year old engine. Some people develop oil leaks in doing this while others don't so it's pretty much a crap shoot. If you want synthetic then put a semi-synthetic in for this oil change then the next one use full synthetic, sort of ease it into it.
1. If you want to port your own throttle body I would just find a junk yard and pick one up to do it. Or you can always buy an aftermarket one, a 50mm TB is the biggest I'd go on your 318.
2. Throttle body spacer = waste of money
3. Elbow grease
4. You can get a FIPK but if you want to get some cheap air flow remove the protective cover that's behind the grill protecting the air tube from moisture and debris. I've ran without one for awhile and I've been fine.
5. I put in 89 or 91, depending on how I'll drive it but I have the performance pcm which requires 91, you'll be fine with 87 or 89.
6. That's a personal preference, I'd keep it. Looking for fuel mileage get a tonneau cover.
7. Search these boards and I guarantee you will find whatever your looking for.
8. Mopar PCM - worth it (P5249516 for yours)
Superchips - worth it
Jet Chip - Not worth it
ebay resistors - not worth it, look into IAT relocation on the boards
Good luck finding the PCM and superchips tuner though.
8. A 180 degree thermostat is a really common mod people do here, these engines are designed to make the most power at 180. The stock 195's are primarily for emissions. Don't go lower than 180 though.

Message: I also have a 92. Mopar PCM made a big difference. I also ported my own TB. Get a junkyard one and do it. There are a couple ways you can screw it up, and you don't want to be without your truck while you wait for another TB.
Check for a blown plenum gasket. Common problem on these trucks.
I have the drop in K&N and removed weatherplate on mine. Works fine. If you are dead set on getting an FIPK, I would suggest a filter from these guys instead. http://www.intenseperformance.com/
They have a good filter that is also filtered at the top. Moves a lot of air, but you lose the benefit of the cooler air from the front of the truck. Hell of a lot cheaper than the FIPK too.
1.7 rockers work well on a stock 92 spec engine, or any magnum for that matter. You might also consider an M1 intake from Mopar. I put one on my truck and I liked it. Also eliminated the plenum gasket problem.
Go 1 step colder on the plugs. Autolite 3923s are a good choice, and cheap. 180 T-stat is also a good idea. If you are close to an advance auto parts, pick up a Prestone 755-180 t-stat, which is the Robert Shaw design that has worked so well in the past.
You could relocate your IAT sensor to the intake tube from the manifold. It results in a slightly richer fuel mixture and gets you a tad more power. Many do not notice a change though.
Get an Accel brass cap/rotor.
Hope this helps and enjoy your new truck. GenII Dakotas are the best IMO.
