Subject: PRESTONE THERMOSTAT RECALL?
IP: Logged

Message:
I installed a Preston generation 2 thermostat (779-190) in to my 98 Dodge Dakota 318. The truck overheated a few blocks down the road. I removed the thermostate and did some measuring. There is no way the thermostate can open it hits the botton of the manifold. Kragens and Preston told me that it is the correct thermostate. Any one else have this problem.

Return it and get part 755-180. The 779-180 is the newer Robert Shaw T-stat. It has some sort of safety valve added to it. 755-180 is still available under the Prestone name, which now owns all the Robert Shaw tooling equipment. Have them search for a 1992 Dakota 318, it comes up as the correct part then. Also you might see if they have the same part number under Fram. It is supposed to be the same part, but comes up as $3.50 cheaper on the website.

Thanks for the reply. I wish there was a class action lawsuit against Preston. My engine over heated because of Prestons mistake. The engine could be damaged from the high temperature.

Hey Scott, I had the exact same problem with my '98 Dakota 318 a couple weeks ago with the prestone gen 2 thermostat. Tryed to return it to Kragen but they refused because I didn't have the box it came in. Still fightin' with them. Class action suite? Count me in.

Zed – I have been searching the net to see about Preston and the thermostat problem, so far nothing. I called Preston and told them my engine is using oil because of the over heated engine. Preston forwarded the call to the claims department, but before I talk to them I wanted to see what my rights are. Here is Prestons number 1(203) 830-7800 . Let me know if you here anything.

I doubt you will find anything regarding problems with the t-stat. It only just hit the market.
