Subject: Anybody dealt with such problems?

My '96 Dak w/ 5.2L has the same erratic idle problems as described in the 'Erratic idle' post from .boB, along with some other frustrating faults.

Sometimes the engine will be at a normal idle and then independently rev up to around 1200rpm. Sometimes it dies when I shift from reverse to drive or when I let off the accelerator at a stop. Other times it doesn't start without pumping the accelerator and once it does start it dies if I let off the accelerator. This problem is temporarily resolved by cleaning the IAC and TB every few months. It also gets lousy fuel milage (14mpg at best) and seems to have less power than when I bought it in '01.

Every time I check the trouble codes, I get a 12 which Chilton says is a power disconnect to computer. I've also recently been getting a cylinder misfire code, 43.
Has anyone been able to resolve similar problems?

It actually sounds like you have multiple "common" problems. You need to check your charging system and make sure your battery is good. Under the hood, near the fuse box, there's a 3 wire splice from the factory that usually corrodes and causes intermittent loss of power to the PCM (computer) and/or fuel system. The splice is not visible without unwrapping the wiring. The wires need to be respliced (soldering is preferable) and insulated. Next, if you seem to be using too much oil, your belly pan gasket may be leaking. This is the gasket that seals the access plate at the bottom of your intake manifold. Symptoms are high oil consumption, oily buildup in the intake manifold which can sometimes be seen through the throttle plates in the throttle body, knock or ping and poor gas mileage. Good luck.

Thanks, Rob. That's probably the faulty ground I've been searching for.

I hardly use any oil at all and I can't see oil through the TB. Any other probable causes for the idle problems and fuel consumption? How do I check my IAC and TPS?

First find and fix the wiring problem then you can worry about the sensors. The sensors do you absolutely no good if the PCM is resetting due to loss of power. That splice is a very common problem. When you're troubleshooting, you want to fix one problem at a time before moving on to the next. The only time you'd move on to another problem is if the problem prevents you from verifying the fix on the previous problem. If you're PCM is losing power, you can't be worried about a sensor. Always fix the most serious problem first. Good luck.

Will do Rob. Thanks a bunch.

Are there other grounds that I should check for the PCM reset problem? The wiring diagram shows two grounds from the PCM: both are black/tan. I traced one to the alternator mount. The other disappears into a massive wire bundle that I wasn't too excited about tearing into. Anybody know off hand where to find all the PCM grounds on a '96 5.2?

I read the many threads about this 3-wire splice and figured it could very well be causing my PCM disconnect problem. I tore into the wiring harness and dozens of yards of electrical tape later, I found that my splice is fine - bright shiny copper. I soldered it anyway while I was there to prevent ever having to do this again. I also had my battery and alternator checked: both strong and securely connected.

Does anybody have any idea why I'm getting a "power disconnect to PCM" code???
