Subject: 318 performance IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 dakota with a 318 motor. This motor has never seemed to run right. It feels weak at low rpms and doesnt start building power until about 3000 rpms. I also can feel a very slight miss at @2000rpms. I checked the intake gasket and there is no oil in the tb area so I think that is ok. Any ideas?

Message: How is the schedule maintenance?
The first thing i can think is the plugs, rotor, plug wires, dist. cap, bad gas, etc, in this order. Good luck.

Message: All the above mentioned maintemance is done. The poor performance is something that I have put up with for along time. One thing I didnt mention is when I bought the truck new in 99 the dealer had to do a engine change under warranty. I complained about the poor performance and the miss eversince then but was unable to fix it. Now that I am posting on this website I was hoping maybe someone here may have some ideas on a fix.

Message: i would like to know the answer to this question as well. im not disappointed at the performance of my 93 318, but after it hits operating temp, it seems to run a little slower. plugs, cap, rotor recently done. wires looked good, so i skimped out on that.

Message: yeah i got a poor performance 318 too, weak on low RPMS but if i turn O/D off it gives a little more kick to it....but i don't think i should have to do that? My trans is leaking so that could be it too but its been this way sence 60,000...90,000 now, i have a clutch fan that won't shut off unless its really cold but i'm in FL so that rarly happens. this F ing fan is what i think is robbing my power, but not quite sure....i need to change plugs soon and get the trans rebuilt , i'll post again when this trans finally gives out to see if my power comes back

Message: I guess I can relate. I've experienced lack of power at lower RPM's too. When I get up to the higher RPM's then it would get better then shift gears right as it starts to haul butt. Then a bit sluggish til you start getting up there in speed. If you slam the gas it would get to the RPM you want but really don't want to have to do that all the time.
Well I recently changed all of the fluids to AMSOIL brand because I've been hearing so much stuff about people who rave about it. Changed the front and rear diff., transfer case, tranny, and coolant (Pep Boys). It's a bit pricey but they claim you won't have to change it as often and it reduces the friction better than others. I had changed my oil to Mobil 1 Synthetic weeks earlier so I didn't change again. Switched to a 180 t-stat.
Anyway there were lots of complaining, screaming, griping in between from all the problems I've had with changin the coolant. After all is done I've noticed a difference. Not earth changing and haven't had it dyno'd but I noticed a difference. It took a few days for me to really notice. Now when I accel it changes to the gears easier, runs a bit smoother, accelerates quicker and so far the mileage is about the same. Will have to give it a few weeks to see the mileage diff. Before I was getting ready to sell it because of all the problems but now I think I'll reconsider because it's starting to drive like I had imagined it to.
Only had 27k on it when I bought it last year (98 5.2 cc 4x4, 3.55 gears limited slip [Jax, FL]) so I figured maybe noone has changed any of this stuff before. It hasn't been driven very much up until I bought it either. Other things I've done to help pep it up (that work) have been changing the muffler to a Magnaflow Hi flow exhaust, Autolite plugs, and drop in K&N filter. Fairly cheap and easy to do. Now I'm a much happier Dak owner.

Message: Davy,
I have a '92 5.2 with high miles. What stores carry the AMSOIL brand? I am still running Havoline 10W-40. I wanted to check the AMSOIL. What other fluids did you change out, just curious?
Thanks,
Dakota5.2
