My 2000 4.7, with 147 000km has begun to make noise. The noise begins while excelerating from dead stop and sounds like putt, putt, putt, and speeds up with the truck. Sort of sounds like mini backfires?

Any ideas....

Speeds up with engine revs or speeds up with vehicle speed?

The noise speeds up with veichle speed, then goes away or I cannot hear it anymore. If I rev the engine in neutral it does not make the noise. I have replaced all plugs, wires, u-joint, fluids, filters and still the noise remains...

I am not that experienced with automotives, I basically learn as it breaks. I had an 85 GMC 1500, bloody well rebuilt that thing.

I have had my Dakota Sport FOR 1.4 years and have fixed u joint, and all maintenance items.

Where abouts would I find these gaskets. Better yet where can I find spec charts with pics on the net?

redfelt, i have had exhaust leaks on other cars than my dak. but wanted to let you know that
you can find a exhaust leak really easy with the vehicle running and get a vacuum hose (about 1/8th or so) and put on end to your ear and feel around the exhaust with the other end AND YOU'LL hear it for sure.

What a great tip! Never heard that one. Bet that would work for a lot of noises.

I usually find exhaust leaks at night with a small flash light. Aim the light across the top of a joint, not at it. You can usually see the exhaust fumes travel through the light beam.

Hey Redfelt, is the noise there all the time? The purge valve on my 2001 dak makes that kind of noise at times. It is a little black canister located near the battery on the fender. If you put your hand on it, it sometimes will 'knock' and you can feel it at the same time as the noise happens. I don't know if it is a problem or not.

Hey,
The noise seems to be coming from the rear when the engine is under load, ie, accelerating uphill from a stop, and pulling a trailer, lOVE MY TRUCK
