Subject: Running rough IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 Dakota V-8 4x4. My check engine light came on flashing and I it started "pinging" under acceleration and running rough. I took it to my mechanic and after a couple days he said #6 cylinder was misfiring 270 some times in 1000. #3 and #5 plugs were bad. (one had green stuff growing on it). After 3 plugs, distributer cap. Still misfires and runs rough but, no check engine light yet. Mechanic said It needs a head gasket to fix rough running and "pinging" Does this sound right to anyone and how much does a headgasket job cost. Anything else I should do while having it done? Thanks for any help!

Message: No offense here wondering, but judgeing from the state of your plugs, your truck would bennefit a lot if you pay more attention to the maintenance.
It pays off.
Also, change all the plugs, not just some of them. They are equally old. If the plug wires are more than 100k, change them too.
While there, change pcv valve and air filter.

Message: All of that stuff was changed, The mechanic I go to is a personal friend and keeps all the records the truck just had a tune up in January, Plugs, distributor cap, plug wires. I change the oil myself at 3000 - 4000 miles (using castrol Synthetic blend) It was just changed 2 weeks ago. Also changed the air filter then. Fuel filter was replaced in January. Also flushed radiator in january. I think that was all.

Message: Did he check for a leak in the belly pan the 5.2/5.9 has a reputation for ? Look down the throttle body - if you can see oil, it needs to be replaced.
