Subject: Dakota R/T missing hp?

Hey everyone!

I just got a 1999 Dakota R/T and I think there is something wrong with it. It came with the original window sticker, and it says it has a 5.9L V8, but only makes 250hp. Is this a typo? Shouldn't an engine this big make a lot more power than that? I figured a truck made in 1999 would have some sort of modern technology, but everything about it is crude and primitive! Isn't this supposed to be the performance version?

I just don't understand what all this displacement is getting me. So far this thing has done nothing but guzzle gas, move slowly, and handle like crap.

Any suggestions?

The beautiful thing about that 5.9 (360) is that engine doesn't need much to get up and move. It has great torque straight from the factory but the horse power isn't quite up to snuff from what you would expect. The aftermarket on that engine is HUGE! There are so many parts made to make that engine roar its crazy. The more you put into a 5.9 the more you will get out of it. And for $1000 or so, that truck will outpull any truck worth $10,000 or more on MSRP.
