Message: I am thinking about buying a 2002 4x4 club cab Dakota with a 4.7L (Wish I could get the 5.9L) but I noticed with can get the full time All-Wheel Drive system on it. Can that system switch to locked 4wd with a low-range or is it always just in AWD?

Message: Yes. It can be switched to 4x4 low. It is a part time 4 wheel drive system.

The AWD system on the 2002 Dakota would better be called a full time four wheel drive system. I recommend it.
My 2000 Dakota has the full time system. Only difference between the two is that 2000 uses a lever to shift the transfer case; 2001 and later use a switch on the dash.
Yes, it has a low range: 2.72 ratio.
The 4.7 with full time transfer case is fantastic. I like mine with the automatic. One of the best snow vehicles and very capable off-road.

Message: One advantage is you won't have to worry about balding your tires. The best I have been able to do is get my left front tire to start to slip, but it just grabs and pulls you back into the seat. I have the '02 RC 4.7 Auto AWD

Message: Thanks, very helpful. Why can't you get the 5.9L in the club cab 4x4. You could get it in the R/T regular and club cab and in the Quad Cab 4x4 but not in the club cab 4x4, Only the 4.7L. Why is that?

Message: I have a 5.2 with limited slip in the rear, and if i lock it into 4 high, I fly off the line once i grab, but still am having traction problems... nothing like it being 90 degrees out, and tempting my friend in his supercoupe (blows the doors off every car its ever raced). Stock tire size on it, and I can't keep the things planted.... it's a 92, got plenty of power, but what would be some suggestions for tire sizes... little wider, and taller?

Message: I have a 2002 Dakota R/T Sport AWD. The AWD system is amazing. The ratio is front to back...
like the subaru WRX... As for the 4x4... it also has many advantages as the rear end full locks up
once you got to 4x4 Hi or Low. And NO its not a part-time 4 wheel drive... Its AWD... 60front and 40 rear... all the time...
As for the 5.9ltr, its old school and the 4.7 has better preformance by far, horse power, and torque... plus much improved fuel economy... forget the 5.9... my 4.7AWD smokes them easy...

Message: Ummmm greg if you have a 2002 dakota with a 4.7 and AWD then its not an R/T. And while i like the 4.7... the factory perfomance of the 5.9 is still higher (not by a large amount) but still higher than the 4.7, but yes the fuel is better.

Message: As I said R/T Sport... check it out my friend ... 10 were shipped to Canada for 2002.
And my 4.7 HO is rated at 275 horse ... 25 more that the 5.9 ... OH ... as for the HO ... check the Grand Cherokee ... same 4.7 HO
As for the regular 4.7 verses the 5,9 ...
5 to 10 horse power difference ... thats noting
the 4.7 has greater compression and higher revs,
it will beat a 5.9 in every aspect except tourque... you can feel the difference when pulling... trust me ... I own both a 2000 5.9 and my R/T 4.7 AWD ... I would be happy to show you my regestration to prove it ... or just look it up. This truck is rare, it stands 1.5" taller comes with 32.7 inch tires from fact. Not to mention a fully locking diff. system ... yes fully locking ... not a posi ...

Message: I was shown the specs on my Dak, from a tech at chrystler... the web site is a dealership link of some kind. I have not been able to find it for myself. The one I saw was at dodge and showed all the exploded views of every part... it was really cool. We were looking for a rear diff, as I hade blown mine. The only one I could find came from a Durango R/T. Sorry for not being able to guide you, but I found one realated artical in a dodge forum regarding ball joints. To the best of my knowlage 500 in total were made, 10 came to Canada and the rest were all to the US...
