Subject: Transmission Question IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 r/t w/about 102k on the odometer. The transmission is going out and i have a few questions. I will start by saying i am mentaly retarded when it comes to anything mechanical. If i am correct i have read that i should have a 46re in my truck. I have found a 96 dodge ram wrecked that has a 5.9 but how do i know if it has the 46re? I can get the ram VERY cheap and swap them if it has the correct transmission. If anybody has any insight on this please help!!
Thanks in advance!!

Message: A couple of quick reference points to look for:
1. The 42/44RE is based on the A904 tranny. The pan is roughly, an even square in shape. The 46RE is based on the A727, and shares the same pan which differs from the 42/44 in one distinct way. On the passenger side front corner of the pan, there's an irregularity to the shape. Instead of the basically square shape, the pan has about a 2"x3" projection on that corner. It's pretty easy to spot.
2. Also, on the passenger side of the tranny, on the section directly behind the bellhousing (basically the middle of the tranny) there's an inverted V in the casting. Kinda hard to see if in the truck, but you can feel it. Most likely, being in a RAM, it's a 46.

Message: Or you could take your VIN to the parts department for translation.
