Subject: AC Problem IP: Logged
Message: I was wondering if you guys can help me out. I have a 5.2L 97' Dodge Dakota. My AC use to work on and off now it's not working at all. When it worked it worked well. I have no clue when it comes to AC for trucks, my fathers an electrician and does refridgeration work so I can get help with adding 134R if I really wanted but I don't think that's the problem. From what I have read it might be a AC clutch problem. Any ideas on what you guys think it might be. Thanks

Message: Well, bigdawg. You can tell if it's the AC clutch by watching it. But based on your post, it's better left to someone with a basic knowledge of automotive AC systems.

Message: Well you are right on that. I have watched it before and yes it is the clutch but I was wondering if it may have been a sensor or something. I would feel good taking it in if I knew it was in good hand but I live in a small town and hate my choices. I took my truck in there before to get something fixed that I knew was wrong and told them and it took them 3 times. They replaced a ball joint when it was a brake pad problem. Anyway I plan on taking it in eventually just was hoping it might be something simple. Awell.

Message: Go to your local Autozone or similar parts store. Look for a refigerant recharge kit. There should be one that includes a pressure gauge. Get it and follow the instructions. I did the same thing on my wifes car. It would need a recharge about once a year. If the freon gets low the AC will cycle on and off, requiring a recharge. The pressure gauge will help confirm that. If it is in fact low, then charger it up. Very easy to do.

Message: well figured out the problem sort of. I can get it to engage but I have to tap on the clutch wheel fairly hard. Think I can just take it off and clean it or do I need a new one? Honetly probably don't have much business under the hood of my truck. The new engines just confuse the hell out of me. This seemed fairly simple thought you might have a fix for it.
