Why do I have two engine fans on my new 2002 quad cab with 5.9?
Why a mechanical fan plus a electric fan? I've read a post where someone took off their engine fan. Anyone else do this? Is the electric good enough by itself?

The electric fan was a part of the heavy-duty cooling & service groups. It is there to assist the mechanical fan in cooling off our 5.9's.

There are some out there that have pulled their mechanical fan. However, most have also modified the electric fan's engaging point, as the stock setting doesn't have it kick on until ~200 degrees Fahrenheit (might be upwards of 210...don't rightly remember).

As for the electric fan's ability to work on its own, I think that really depends on your driving style & climate. Speaking for myself, I know that my electric alone won't cut it, but that is because of the air-flow restriction imposed by my Warn winch. Coupled with stop-and-go city driving, my summer time temps are pretty much pegged around the 210 mark during the summer...obviously with both fans working in unison.

Hope that helps. 8^)
