Message: I understand that the new Hemi that Dodge is putting out shuts down cylinders at cruising speeds to save fuel. What does everyone think of that? Cadillac tried this in the early 80's and failed miserably. Does anyone know the reliabilty of these new Hemi motors? And also if you consistently shut down cylinders is there an issue of uneven wear between cylinders used and unused.
I am really interested in the new Hemi charger but reluctant to purchase until I hear some honest opinions about this new hemi motor.

Message: I don't know about how they "shut down" half the cylinders. But if they are just shutting out the fuel and spark to those 4 cylinders, to getter better fuel milage when not accelerating, those cylinders would get some wear. The crankshaft would still be moving the rods and pistons through the cylinders.

Message: there is a solenoid to the lifters of 4 cylinders. Not only does it shut off the fuel and spark, but it also restricts oil to the lifters and that keeps the valves from opening.
DC put over a million miles through test vehicles before the MDS was put in the car HEMI's.. not in the truck.
back when chevy/caddy tried it in the 80's, they just lacked the technology to get it done right.
now there are more companies coming out with their own version including chevy in the next couple years.

Message: For me i would rather have all eight cylinders firing and eliminate yet another variable to go wrong. I can see it now at 60,000 miles the check engine light comes on and some obscure rpm and injection sensor needs to be replaced....I really like the body style and the new motor minus the cylinder feature....I am not convinced yet to purchase it....
If you want good gas mileage then buy a japanese 4 cylinder sewing machine....
