Subject: Rear End Axle Play... IP: Logged
Message: I've been having a noise in my rear end for a few weeks. Took the wheels and drums off and can't find no indications of any problems with the brake system. I did notice when yanking around on the wheel flange I have one side (drivers side) that has more play than the other side (passengers side). When pushing and pulling on it I can make the exact same noise as I'm hearing when driving. It's just in and out play, up, down, left, and right seems tight and fine. The other side has just a small tick of play, something that wouldn't conern me, but this other side has more play than expected, but not sure if it's a problem or not.

Message: yeah i got the same truck as you. Replace the fluid in the diff. if you havn't already but i think the play is normal every dodge i have owned has had some, that would explain the reverse having a loud clunk but maybe it can be fixed i dont know but i've drivin it this way for 30,000 miles no problems yet knock on wood

Message: The rear end noise only seems to happen when I apply the brakes. Driving at any speeds quiet as she can be when off the brakes. The noise only really kicks in around 15-20 mph when coming to a stop, but as far as I can tell only recently started. The diff has been serviced by the book and is not due till like another what 10,000 miles or so according to the book. I don't tow either so I know that's not causing the problem. Guess I'll just go back and play the music louder till something gets worse for now.
Oh yeah, gota love the reverse clunk.

Message: Those rears are junk. Get it checked out by a good mechanic. I've seen a number of Dodges and Jeeps at the salvage auction with one of the rear axle shafts missing and the truck rolled. My Cherokee had to have the rear rebuilt at just over 100K miles for more or less the same symptoms you're describing. The bearings are substandard and tend to wear out causing extra play. Not to mention the Anti-spin rear! My '00 Dakota had 83K (mostly highway)well serviced miles on it and the rear axle needed a new pinion bearing, the Antispin was slipping AND I was suspecting a bad left rear wheel bearing. I was going to do a complete rebuild and install a Powertrax locker, but due t the number of other problems with the truck I decided to cut my loses and unload it. Do yourself a favor. If you plan on keeping the truck get it fixed before it becomes a bigger problem.
