Message: There are a lot of threads on these boards, and a lot of opinions on that subject. I couldn't find much of a consensus, so this is what I did: I purchased the cheapest rotors I could find, they cost me CDN $52 for the pair, some offshore brand from a local 'mom & pop' parts shop. If they need replacing next year, so be it ...they're cheap. The pads will probably last for 2 sets of rotors at the rate I was replacing them.
I think it's very important to bed the pads properly in any event. Read this good article and do the bedding procedure as described. I 'smoke' my brakes every couple months or so, to maintain a good transfer layer as mentioned in the article.
Another important thing to do is torque the lug nuts properly; 85-115 ft. lbs. in a pattern, and in 2 or more stages up to final torque. I torque mine to 100.
I've got several thousand miles on my cheap rotors, and so far ...so good.
Your mileage may vary.
