Hello all, I love these forums and have been members of other’s like the 3SI group for years.

I would like some advice/opinions. I have been looking at trucks for a while. I think I have decided on one tonight. 1998 Dodge Dakota 4x4 extended cab V8 5.2L 85K for $9500

It's in near mint condition. Obviously well taken care of and I will check all maintenance records and find out if the ball joints have been changed yet. Is there an actual recall where the dealer will do it for free?

What do you think of this price for this truck? I have been doing a lot of looking the last week and the price seems reasonable, especially from a dealer. They are a small dealer and did not try to jerk me around and talk me into thinks like so many others.

Advise and opinions appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The recall on the ball joints unfortunately was only for 2000-2003. So they will not replace them for free. See if they will offer any kind of warranty on the vehicle. It may cost a couple hundred dollars but will prove usefull when things start going wrong.

thats way too expensive. i wouldnt pay more than 7 for it. a 99 gmc sierra 1500 5.3 or 4.8 or the chevy silverado of that year, it worth 9k in good condition, but thats a more reliable truck. dakota is a great rig, but its a 50/50 shot. you might get one that you work on every day, or you might get one that you never touch, like me.

I think price may be relevent to where you live. I have been looking for a while and this is the best deal I have seen for a truck with all these options. I have seen many simular trucks that are going for a LOT more, 12K and over.

You've described my truck to a tee. Bought a 98 5.2L cc SLT 4x4 last year Jax, FL. At a dealer for 12k. I thought that was a rip until I saw it only had 25k on it and it was in really good condition. It was right at kelley blue book. Most people think my truck is newer than it really is. All was peachy until one day my console lights up with problems.

Jayb is right about the 50/50 shot. I've heard everything from no problems at all to having to fix nearly everything on it. I love my truck but it is getting really old having to fix things all the time. Had a small Mazda pickup for 10 years and hardly had to replace squat and NEVER left me stranded. This dodge has already left me stranded and had dealer warranty fix over 1500 bucks in repairs. And messing with dealers SUCKS. They should all be in jail for the crap they pull. I'm sure other makes have their problems too but next vehicle I buy (sooner rather than later) will be something other than Dodge.

I'm in the precess of getting an extended warranty for it. I have used them before and they can be a life saver and I have had ones I have never had to use. I can get a 5 yr and 100K additional milage from what I have now for under $700, well worth it in the long run. I have done research with BBB and other sourses on the company but will do more before I buy.
